Honors Course Offerings launch

HON 101: Honors Colloquium

We view this course as the introduction to the Honors Program. HON 101 teaches students best practices in conducting scholarly research, writing, presentation, and peer collaboration. It helps students grow a host of skills that will carry them throughout their academic career, and fosters connection and networking within the honors community.

Each section is shaped by the instructor's interests, but they all include opportunities to direct your learning and dive deeply into topics that are meaningful to you.

Available section for Summer:

  • Modern Myths and World Mythology (Online 8-week 5/31-7/26): COVID-19, lizard people, the Illuminati, and Q-ANON have more in common with the stories of Vishnu, Coyote, Zeus, and Ishtar than you'd think! In this class we will be investigating how humans use myths and stories to make sense of their world. We'll be studying mythology in the classical, academic sense, but then we will see how ancient myths and mythological concepts apply to modern social and political phenomena. With lots of possibilities for your final project, this course will be a great opportunity to explore your interests this summer! (CRN 30842 with Emily Besich)

Available sections for Fall:

  • Board Games Are Life (In Person 16-week): Did you ever feel that games have the power to change the world? Come explore the notion with your fellow honors students, as we learn how the same skills that make a compelling board game can be used to influence behavior and promote social justice! (CRN 10047 with Kyley Segers)
  • Be the Change You Wish to See (Online 14-week): This section focuses on creating meaningful social change and personal empowerment. Students will learn about self-actualization in an applied way by having opportunities to directly volunteer for organizations and through assignments investigating the science of well-being. Apply a psychological lens, develop critical thinking skills, and foster an understanding of research methods. (CRN 12213 with Dr. Caroline Pyevich)
  • Your Social Imagination (Online 14-week): Student imaginations and fascinations and experiences direct the subject matter of this course. We spend the first month thinking about society, the effects of culture, and the social imagination. After that, we discern meaningful topics for the students, commence scholarly investigations, and participate in society with volunteer hours. The final projects in this course are in tandem, where students create a website and a research paper or alternative project to articulate and share their findings. (CRN 11789 with Frankie Rollins)

Important: HON 101 replaces STU 100, STU 106, or STU 107 in any degree pathway. No special paperwork is needed - simply enroll in HON 101 to meet the STU 100, STU 106, or STU 107 requirements in your degree plan.

HON 210: Honors Advisory Council

Learn more about how the Honors Program runs at Pima College. Students will attend monthly College Honors Advisory Council meetings, participate in discussions and decision making with faculty, administration, and students, and take on leadership roles within the Honors Program.

Registration is restricted - contact your Campus Honors Coordinator to sign up.

HON 296: Honors Independent Study Project

Shape your involvement with honors and earn college credit! Work as an embedded mentor in HON 101 or in an "HC" course with one of our Honors Program Faculty Fellows, or develop and execute a project that breaks the mold!

This course must be planned in advance. Please contact your faculty member to discuss this option before the start of the semester.

  • ECN 150HC, ECN 201HC, ECN 202HC

Spotlight: WRT 101HC and WRT 102HC

Many "HC" classes are embedded in non-HC sections - that means as an honors student you will be working independently or with a small group of students on honors-specific content. Notable exceptions to this are our full-honors sections of WRT 101HC and WRT 102HC. These classes are restricted to honors-eligible students only, and the entire curriculum is designed with honors students in mind.

We recommend students who are new to the program sign up for HON 101 and WRT 101HC their first semester, and WRT 102HC their second. This will give you a strong introduction to the program, help you connect with many fellow honors-students, and put you well on your way to completing the criteria for the Honors Program Certificate!

Available sections:

  • WRT 101HC CRN 11264 - Tues 12:45-2:00pm (Virtual)
  • WRT 102HC CRN 11229 - Thurs 9:45-11:00am (Virtual)
  • WRT 102HC CRN 12394 - Tues 12:45-2:00pm (Virtual)

Honors Contracts in Any Class

Students who have completed HON 101 or are currently enrolled are invited to complete an Honors Contract to turn any class (numbered 100 or above) into honors credit.

In an Honors Contract you work with your instructor to develop an appropriate project to elevate the course to honors level. Examples of projects include conducting independent research, creating original artworks, interviews or job shadowing, service learning, developing resources or classroom materials - the sky is the limit!

To start the Honors Contract process, contact your Campus Honors Coordinator within the first two weeks of the semester.
