Kindergarten MP3 Campus
Monthly Progress
Language Arts
Topics:
Spiders, reading, writing, phonics,
Letters/sounds: B,b, S,s,
Sight word: the, is,
Activities:
We have practiced letters, sounds and sight words through worksheets, games, reading poems, stories, and discussions. Students have practiced writing their name with a beginning capital and remaining lower case letters in a variety of ways and are showing nice progress! I can already see an improvement from the first days of school. (Continue to be working on this at home.)
Students have read poems: "The", "The Spider", and "Is!".
We have practiced letter formation for the letters A,a, B,b, and Ss, both with and without lines, on paper, white boards, and shaving cream! We are working hard to remember to start our letters at the top. Be sure you are practicing correct letter formation at home. Bad habits are hard to break!
Some of the important books we have read this month include: Aarrrggghhh Spider!, Are You a Spider?, The Magic School Bus Gets Caught in a Web, and The Itsy Bitsy Spider.
Looking Forward:
Everyone's goal for the end of the school is be able to correctly write their name, to know all of their letters and letter sounds, and to be able to write 2 sentences. These are things that we are working towards and should be a priority at home as well. Please make sure you are really focusing on having them practice writing their name with a beginning capital and remaining lower case letters and continuing working towards knowing their letters and letter sounds, as this will help them so much with their writing as well. A great way to help kids get over that fear of writing and making mistakes is having them do free writing about their day or any topics they like and encouraging 'kindergarten writing'. Kindergarten writing is just doing their best to write down all of the sounds they are hearing in words instead of focusing on it being right or not. It's important to get comfortable making mistakes and trying to do things even when they are hard!
Social Studies
Topics:
Rules and procedures
Getting along
Getting to know each other
How we go to school
Activities:
Kindergarteners are getting to know one another and continue to learn and practice classroom rules, routines and how to care for materials. Some routines include: entering the room in the morning, sitting at tables, working at centers, preparing for and eating snack, recess, lining up, cleaning up and packing for home.
We have learned about “Superstar” listening and speaking skills (eyes on speaker, ears listening, mouth closed, hands and feet to self, raise hand for turn to speak) This takes time, as we always have so many things to share.
Science
Topics:
Spiders
Activities:
We read various books about spiders, fiction and non-fiction.
We played with a spider sensory bin.
We watched scholastic and Mystery Science videos about spiders: "Tricky Spiders" and "Spiders for Kids/Learn all about these amazing arachnids".
We practice writing about interesting facts that we have learned about spiders.
We did fun art projects like making spiders out of playdough, drawing our own spider webs, and painting water color spider webs.
As we began to learn about spiders, students each added a spider on a chart to show if they were afraid of spiders, or not. We also created a KWL chart (Know, Wonder, Learned). Students contributed ideas for the chart about what they already know about spiders, and they came up with some great wonderings. We added things that we learned about spiders each day. We are currently in the process of finishing up our spider unit with a final art and writing project.
