Whitesburg Parents and Guardians,

What a great first week of learning we have had at the Burg!

We launched our Buddy-A-Thon fundraiser this week! Our students enjoyed our kick-off so much, with some of them even asking if this was one of our PBIS Celebrations. They are also excited to raise the money to be able to get their Buddy and accessories. Remember that the Buddy-a-Thon will run from Wednesday, August 19, 2025 through Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

The funds raised will help us purchase outdoor classroom materials for our students. We have already had $10,000 donated from your family and friends! I cannot wait to see if we reach our goal of $20,000!

On September 30, students will choose and build their own 16” Buddy, complete with a heart insert and birth certificate—an event they will never forget!

Let's continue to strive for excellence in everything that we do.

Thank you for your support! I am blessed to serve with you at the BURG!

Shine Bright Whitesburg!

Thanks,

Mrs. Jones

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures – Car Riders

Parents, we need your help to ensure that arrival and dismissal run smoothly and, most importantly, safely for our students.

🚗 All car riders must go through the car line.

The only exceptions are:

  • Pre-Kindergarten (PK): Parents must come into the building to sign students in and out.

  • Resource Students: Parents may park and walk their child to the west side of the building to hand them directly to their teacher.

🚶 Walkers:

If your child is a walker and you truly walk with them from off campus, you are welcome to accompany them to the sidewalk at the second yellow gate and say your good-byes there. Students will then walk independently to the arrival door.

  • Please note: Driving to the school parking lot and then walking your child to the door does not count as being a walker. If you drive your child on to the school campus, they are considered a car rider and must go through the car line.

  • Parents may not walk students up to the arrival doorway, as that area is reserved for students exiting their vehicles through the car line.

⏱ For all car riders, drop-off and pick-up through the car line is both safe and efficient. This morning, it took only three minutes for a car to move from the entrance of the line to the arrival door. Leaving home just a few minutes earlier ensures you have ample time to follow this procedure.

This process is not meant to make things difficult but is designed to protect your children. Parking lot drop-offs are unsafe, as vehicles often drive through too quickly without regard for students walking.

If these expectations are not followed, our SROs and CSOs will begin patrolling the parking lot to enforce proper procedures. We would prefer not to reach that point, and we trust that with your cooperation, it will not be necessary.

Thank you for helping us keep every student safe.

Dismissal Walkers

Thank you to all walker parents in being patient with us on our strange weather days we've had this week. It is unusual that we have already had two days that were of concern. We maybe had one day last year that we had to keep walkers at the building instead of letting the walk due to inclement weather.

Reminders:

  • The only way that I will hold the walkers from walking is if it is storming - Extreme rain, lightening, warnings, etc. If it is just raining we will continue to walk. I will always send you a message if I am holding the walkers, but it will always be a last minute message. I cannot make the call until the last minute.
  • On the rare occasion that I hold walkers and not let them walk, parents will need to drive through the car line. Remember, all students were given car tags on the first day of school. You must have your car tag or you will have to go to the office, with your ID, to pick up your child.

Huntsville Literacy Council

Huntsville Literacy Council's (HLC) mission is to improve literacy rates and promote a love of reading at an early age. They believe that literacy is the foundation for success in all areas of education.

There are volunteers from HLC who will begin working with some of our Burg students to help give them the extra push they need to become proficient readers.

They need your help! Anyone that would like to volunteer with HLC would be very beneficial to them and to WBES student's academic success. If you are not able, please pass this information along to anyone you think would be a good fit. The time involved would be approximately and hour a day, two to three days a week.

Please see their website for more information. I have also added Ms. Junia Haymond's, HLC Secretary and Treasurer, contact information below.

Slushies

We will sell slushies each Friday afternoon.

· $1 for 5oz cup

· $5 for souvenir Whitesburg Elementary Plastic Cup. This cup can be reused each Friday for a $2 refill.

(Slushie Friday's intention is not a fundraiser. It is for student encouragement and celebration. However, we do make a little money off of the sales, and that money goes into WBES's General Budget and is used for student incentives.)

23-24 Whitesburg Elementary's Alabama State Report Card Grade

The official State of Alabama School Report Card grade for Whitesburg was released today. Our official score is an 82, which is a "B." While we are excited to have a "B," let's continue to strive to increase that score with a goal of raising our "B" to an "A." We will continue to work with our students to be grade level proficient. Parents can help us by working closely with the teachers to get ideas of how you can help you child at home, encouraging them to do their very best every day, and to make sure they are in attendance each day.

Bullying

Any intentional and repeated act of unwanted aggressive or demeaning behavior involving a real or perceived power imbalance, in which one or more people intentionally and repeatedly cause physical or psychological harm to another person. To be considered bullying, the conduct must also place a student in reasonable fear of harm or of damage to property, have the effect of substantially interfering with educational performance or school operations, or create a hostile, intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment.
