Hello WCSD#1 Families!

This month we are highlighting related services, as well as thanking all of those related service providers that serve your students.

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Related Services are defined as "transportation and such developmental, corrective, and other supportive services as are required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from special education." These related services provided under IDEA are crucial in helping students with disabilities access and benefit from their special education programs in various ways:

Some common Related Services in Washakie County School District #1 are:

  1. Counseling Services: We have three counselors dedicated entirely to Special Education. These individuals provide both group and individual counseling, as well as serve as strong advocates for your student's and their individual needs.
  2. Occupational Therapy: We contract with Gottsche for all our Occupational Therapy needs and they continue to go above and beyond. They work on fine motor skills with our student as well as help us identify and meet the sensory and adaptive needs of our students.
  3. Physical Therapy: We also contract with Gottsche for our Physical Therapy needs. They address gross motor needs, physical access, and mobility needs. Going to physical therapy is most of our students favorite activity during the day. I appreciate how much fun our PT providers can make receiving their service.

  4. Speech-Language Pathology Services: We currently provide students with a hybrid in-person/virtual model for speech services. Our SLP's have been wonderful about providing in person services for those students that require it and meeting virtually for those that do not. In addition, all three of our SLP's work hard to not only meet the students needs but also our teacher's needs.
  5. Transportation: Finally, WCSD #1 transportation staff is second to none! They help transport our students to and from services all day everyday with a smile on their face and joy in their heart.

In my opinion, WCSD#1 has the BEST related services staff in the state. They go above and beyond for our students. If at any time you have questions about related services, please contact me. We will also be having an interactive Q&A session on "Related Services" on Tue, November 18th. See you there!

THINK HIGHER! THINK COLLEGE! THINK HIGHER! THINK COLLEGE!

"Think Higher. Think College." Campaign Video with Captions

This video highlights the many things students with intellectual disability love about college: living in the dorm, taking classes that they choose, making friends, eating good food, participating in campus activities, and being independent. Hear from students and faculty from 5 different college campuses around the country about all the ways everyone benefits from students with intellectual disability going to college. It will make you “Think Higher. Think College.” Learn more at the “Think Higher. Think College.” campaign website: www.thinkhighered.net.

Our Special Education Department strives to provide a continuum of comprehensive educational services for all students with disabilities. Academic, as well as functional skills are an important part of each student’s education program. The program for a student may include but is not limited to: academics, adaptive PE, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech/language therapy, behavior interventions, and counseling.

Child Find is an important activity for our school district. If you are aware of a child who may have a disability and is not receiving educational services please notify us at the ERC.
