Greetings, Cardinals!

Welcome back to the 2025/2026 school year! The Sun Prairie East staff were hard at work last week getting our school ready for students to arrive. We can't wait to get the school year started. This week's Cardinal Call format has been adjusted slightly. We have general announcements at the top and important day one information in a lower section. Due to the volume of new school year related information we wanted to make the newsletter easier to understand. Should you have any questions as the new year begins, please reach out to school staff. See you on Tuesday!

Sincerely,

Jim Ertel

District Technology Policy Update

Loaner Chromebook Procedure Update and Reminders:

Students should be coming to school with their charged Chromebooks each and every day. If they are having technical issues with their Chromebooks, their Library Media Center is the place to take their Chromebooks to be exchanged or repaired.

Students WILL ONLY be issued a loaner Chromebook for the reasons listed below:

  • Lost device

  • Broken device (if there are no devices available for exchange)

  • Testing

Loaner devices must be returned to the library before the end of the school day. Loaner Chromebooks that are damaged, or not returned will incur charges.

Keep in mind that there are a limited number of loaner devices at each school. Therefore, if a student forgets their Chromebook, there will likely not be a loaner available for them to use.

Please support your student by ensuring they bring their charged Chromebooks to school each and every day.

Monitoring Student Activity on School-Issued Devices via Securly

Securly is the tool used by the District to keep harmful content on school-issued devices away from our students. This year, we’ve added a feature that will allow our teachers to directly observe what is on the Chromebook screens of the students in their classrooms.

The Securly tool also allows parents and caregivers to observe their child's activity while using school-issued devices. Parents and caregivers can access this information by viewing their child's Activity Feed. Parents and caregivers also receive Flagged Activity notifications that inform them of any flagged activities pointing to self-harm or bullying related to their child.

Please see the instructions included in the links below for more information on how to access the Securly app:

Grading in 2025-2026

The one page document below details the adjustments to the grading policy for 2025-2026. Changes have been made to our past policy around deadlines, the missing work floor, retakes, multipliers, and incompletes. Teaching staff will be working to finalize some department-level parameters when they return to work next week. Those decisions will be reflected in course-level syllabi and will be communicated by the teaching staff at the start of the school year. Here are some key highlights:

  • Deadlines: All formatives and summatives due by the end of the quarter, which includes retake
    attempts.
Assessments returned to students with feedback less than one week before the
end of the quarter will be put on the next quarter’s grading window.
  • Missing Work: M=40%. Missing assessments at the end of the quarter will remain M, 40%. The
lowest possible score for an attempted assessment is 50%.
  • Retakes: Every student is guaranteed an opportunity to take and retake an assessment once within the quarter the assessment was assigned. Students can make up an assessment from an absence regardless of attendance coding. Departments aligned across East and West can determine if they will allow more than one retake and can determine what must be complete before a retake (study guide, test corrections, etc)
  • Attempting Summatives: Students must attempt at least half of summatives to be eligible to pass the class (not new this year, but important to be aware of).

Grading in 2025-2026 - Are we moving away from letter grades? No.

A common question that has come up this past year is, are we moving away from A-F grading at the high schools?

ANSWER: No, the A–F grading system is not changing. Some assignments may be scored using a 1–4 scale to show how well a student understands the material, but those scores will still be converted into points and percentages. You can learn more by clicking the “Grading for Learning” link HERE.

Busing Information

Preliminary transportation information is viewable in Infinite Campus by logging into Campus Parent, click on ‘More’ then choose the Transportation tab. If the bus stop does not look accurate, please contact Kobussen. Pickup and drop off times are continually changing as new students enroll and other students move out of the district.

A new change this year! High School students will not have bus tags. If busing staff need to check route attendance, they will utilize Infinite Campus.

Please contact Brinda Thompson at brinda.thompson@kobussen.com or (608) 825-8700 ext. 5509, if you have questions or concerns about your child’s bus route or stop. If you have any other questions related to busing, please contact either Lisa Sprindis at lasprin@sunprairieschools.org or Rhonda Page at rspage@sunprairieschools.org. If your child is NOT going to ride the bus but is eligible please stop by the bus table at registration or reach out to one of the people above.

Electronic Devices Update

Linked below is our Bell-to-Bell no Cell poster! As students and staff return to our buildings, they will see these posters and flyers in public spaces and classrooms. “Bell-to-Bell no Cell” is the theme for our focus on increasing the use of instructional time and improving scholar outcomes. When students return to school we will have lessons prepared for SP30 and content area classes about electronic device expectations. Our top priority is teaching students how to use devices responsibly and to build skills around safe and productive technology use.

School Supplies

At the High School level we do not have a standard school supply list. Many teachers will let your students know of any specific materials they will need for class during the first couple of days. To start the year please have your student bring a notebook/s, pens/pencils and their Chromebook (more information on Chromebooks to come). As we implement our new electronic devices policy this year, it is essential that every student has a charged Chromebook every day. Many students also benefit from having a binder/s to organize their materials.

Some specific class requests can be found on our website under the "Academics" section.

Calculators

If your student is planning to take PreCalculus, AP Calc, and/or AP Stats, they will benefit from having a graphing calculator, which can also be used for the ACT and in Algebra 2 math classes and beyond. The TI84+ or TI84+ CE are what most students use, but there are other types of graphing calculators as well. The school does have a limited number of graphing calculators available to be checked out, and priority is given to students in AP math classes. For students in other classes who wish to have a calculator, a scientific calculator such as the TI-30 is sufficient. Students will have access to online graphing calculators through their Chromebooks.

Student Schedules Available in Infinite Campus

Student schedules are available for viewing on Infinite Campus as of August 15, 2025 at 12pm . A few things to note as you begin to prepare for the 2025/2026 school year:

  • All schedules are subject to change based on staffing, room assignment and balancing of courses. We recommend that your student checks their schedule the day before school starts one more time in the event of slight changes.
  • While we try to accommodate all student course requests, there are times when a student may not get all the classes they originally requested. This happens for a number of possible reasons, including but not limited to: lack of student interest, staffing, space availability, schedule conflicts, etc. In these cases, we default students to alternate courses.
  • This year we are using a new feature of Infinite Campus called Cross Site Enrollment. If you are an East student and receiving this email and The Howl, that is an indicator that you are scheduled for a course at West. If you are taking a course that is scheduled at the other high school from your typical boundary school (I go to West but have a class at East or I go to East but have a class at West) it will be indicated in their schedule with a blue location symbol (similar to a Google maps symbol). If you are in a “traveling course” information regarding shuttle times, etc will be shared before the first day of school.
  • If your child is wanting to request a schedule change, please review the Schedule Change Policy for eligibility first. If the request meets the eligibility requirements, please use this form.

If you have specific questions regarding your students schedule, please feel free to reach out to your student's school counselors at the contact information below:

PSAT Information: Attention Juniors!

The PSAT (Preliminary SAT) is a valuable standardized test co-sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. It serves as both practice for the SAT and as the first step toward qualifying for scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Program. The PSAT helps students assess their skills in key areas—Reading, Math, and Writing/Language.

This test is particularly important for 11th-grade students who are looking to gain insight into their SAT performance and open doors to scholarship opportunities. The PSAT is typically offered in the fall, and 11th-grade students can register to take the exam on an optional basis.

Important: If you would like to take the PSAT exam during the fall of the 2025-2026 school year on Wednesday October 15th, please complete the attached Google form by Monday September 8th, 2025.

For more details or questions, feel free to reach out to Ms. Thao at pthao@sunprairieschools.org.

Don’t miss this opportunity to start preparing for the future and potentially earn scholarships!

Congressional APP Challenge

As a Member of Congress, Representative Pocan has the honor of nominating outstanding young people from the Second District for an appointment to one of our nation’s service academies. Although a nomination is not a guarantee that a student will attend a U.S. Service Academy, it is required to apply to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point.

Our office is accepting nomination applications through Friday, October 17th. We will be holding an informational day for students, parents, and teachers on Wednesday, September 17th, to see presentations on the service academy admissions process. You will have

the opportunity to speak to representatives from each of the five academies and staff from our district office. Please let any interested students know that they can contact our office at 608-258-9800 or email the Service Academy Nominations Coordinator at Diego.Benitez@mail.house.gov with questions.

Ms. Leja has access to copies of the application for interested students.
