Event Information

Virtual Meet the Teacher

MJE Virtual Meet the Teacher Event

Once new class lists are finalized, your teachers will be reaching out to schedule a time to virtually meet with your child in small group settings. We will do this via the computer to give a few minutes for each child to interact with their teacher and a few other classmates.

Your child will not be online from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Each child will have a scheduled time during the window of 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Class Lists must be redone due to the 2 Instructional Models being used in KISD. We must take the class lists and match them to our KVA students and F2F student groups to build new class lists. Since the KVA option did not close until August 7 at midnight, we have only been able to begin work on this over the weekend.

HAC (Home Access Center) is still scheduled to be open on Monday, August 17.

Watch for more details on class lists and/or Virtual Meet the Teacher.

*UPDATED* COVID-19 Self-Reporting APP, Notifications & Information

The District has a COVID-19 Reporting System in place to allow staff, students and parents to self-report if they have received a COVID-19 positive test result. The self-reporting system enables the District’s Emergency Management team to conduct contact tracing, as well as call and notify individuals in Katy ISD buildings who may have been directly exposed to the infected person. A general email notification is also sent to campus staff and families whenever the district is informed of a potential “indirect” COVID-19 exposure in their building. Receipt of the general notification alone indicates that the recipient was not in close contact to the COVID-19 positive case reported for their building.

Many school personnel have begun returning to campuses for various trainings. Should there be a potential COVID-19 exposure on any campus, a general notification will be sent to staff at the work site impacted, by 5:00 p.m. on the day in which the self-report was submitted. Staff who may have been directly exposed because of failed COVID-19 safety protocol will be notified directly by a member of the Risk Management Department.

Parents will only begin to receive applicable campus-based general notifications when students return to schools for the in-person instructional option. Parents of students who may be involved in fine arts or athletic activities on campuses right now, may receive a general notification through Rank One (athletics) or Charms (fine arts), ahead of the September 8 reopening, if the District is informed of a potential exposure at their campus.

Students and staff may report positive COVID-19 results using the COVID-19 Self Reporting app on MyKaty Cloud.

In-Person Instructional Option

No action is required of parents who wish for their student to participate in in-person instruction on September 8. Students opting for the in-person instructional option will begin school on Wednesday, August 19 via the intermittent school to home virtual learning plan through Friday, September 4.

Intermittent School to Home Virtual Learning

To successfully transition students electing in-person instruction to a temporary virtual learning environment beginning on August 19 and back to in-person instruction on September 8, the Katy ISD Intermittent School to Home Virtual plan will be in effect. The intermittent school to home virtual learning plan ensures our students electing the in-person instructional option, remain scheduled and supported by their home campus teachers during the temporary suspension of in-person instruction. Intermittent school to home virtual learning occurs when there is a need to temporarily delay or close a district, campus or classroom as a result of COVID-19. In the event that the district, a campus or a classroom must transition from in-person instruction to intermittent virtual instruction, teachers will continue to instruct their students remotely and follow the Katy ISD curriculum that has been developed within Canvas, the District learning Management System.

During intermittent home to school virtual learning, teachers will engage and communicate with students on a daily basis. Schedules will be communicated to students and families by the teachers, and remote instruction will include some face to face time and some time for students to work independently using a variety of online learning resources. Teachers will assign coursework and monitor student progress following the Katy ISD Grading and Reporting Guidelines. Campuses may provide additional information on intermittent learning that is campus/course specific. The intermittent plan will ensure there are no missed days of school, as virtual instruction will begin immediately. More information about this can be found in the Intermittent Home to School Virtual Learning Resource Guide that will be located under ‘Return to School Information’ on our Smart Restart webpage.

Class Structure and Instruction

What will virtual instruction look like the first three weeks? Will it be similar to how things were done in the Spring, or will it be real time teaching via Zoom (or similar technology)?

Instruction will be different to what was provided during the Spring of 2020. Students will be learning new material based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills as outlined in the Katy ISD Curriculum. Real-time instruction will take place each day. Instruction will be a blend of live synchronized instruction between teachers and students online as well as asynchronous instruction that will not require the teacher and student to be engaged the entire time. Parents and students will have access to essential instructional materials by accessing Canvas. Each parent will receive a schedule for their MJE child that will outline the instructional day which will include specific times for teacher office hours, morning circle, content block times, ELT/Jamboree, smaller group instruction, lunch, and Music/Art/PE times. Assignments and assessments will be given and graded using the Katy ISD grading scale.

Will both virtual and in-person instruction follow the Katy ISD 2020-2021 Instructional Calendar?

Yes, virtual and in-person instruction will follow the same calendar and curriculum. Click the link below to access the Katy ISD Instructional Calendar.

● Click here to view the 2020-2021 Katy ISD Instructional Calendar

Is the first day of school the same for both instructional programs?

Yes, both our Face to Face and Katy Virtual Academy programs start on Wednesday, August 19th.

How will virtual attendance be taken?

Just as with traditional on-campus attendance, teachers will take and post attendance as if the students were physically present on the campus. Students and teachers will be logged in dand engaged throughout the instructional day as directed by The Texas Education Agency (TEA). Some instruction will not be delivered in-person or real time; however, daily engagement and progress will be required.

What will a typical virtual daily school schedule look like for a student?

Students will be engaged in a mixture of synchronized and asynchronized learning during their virtual instruction time. This means students will need to be logged in at specific times throughout the day to engage in a LIVE lesson or activity with their class. This also means there will be time throughout the day your child will work on an assignment or activity without needing to be logged in. Specific grade level and student schedules will be shared beginning next week.

Will my child be able to keep the same homeroom teacher all year?

We always work hard to maintain the same teachers all year long. Campus growth with new enrollees and other factors have impacted this for some students in the past. This year, with KVA and F2F enrollments, everything is different. The short answer is: we don’t know. It will be dependent on the movement of students between our KVA and F2F instructional models. Parents have the option to decide if their child(ren) will be in KVA or F2F each grading period, and if the numbers fluctuate greatly, there is a possibility that students’ class assignments could change. This could also impact the number of teachers needed for either KVA or F2F on our campus. If a teacher must move from one instructional model to the other, surely our student placements will be impacted as well.

Can visitors come to campus?

No. There will be no visitors on campus during Phase 1. Most all of our meetings will take place over Zoom. In the event this is not possible, an appointment may be set but CDC guidelines must be met in order for this to take place.

Face to Face (F2)

How many students per class for face-to-face instruction?

As is the case every year, class size will depend upon total enrollment at each grade level. In the fall, we were staffed to accommodate a 22:1 ratio in PK-4 and a 25:1 ratio in grade 5 based on our projected enrollment. With the added option of parent choice for Katy Virtual Academy or the face to face instruction, these ratios will be impacted. Due to KVA, we anticipate starting the year beneath the ratios below.

For in person instruction, will students have switch teachers? If so, will the students go to a different class, or will the teachers switch classrooms?

Yes, many of our grade levels use block scheduling and will have switch teachers. Students will switch classes. Student desks will be sanitized when students arrive and depart from classes. Wipes are being provided for all students and staff to use to sanitize their desks before and after use. In addition, hand sanitizing bottles will be available in each room as well as several hand sanitizing stations throughout the building.

Will students go to PE, Music and Art in F2F instruction?

Beginning September 8, when students return to school they will follow a restricted rotation schedule that will prevent our classes from mixing as is normally seen in the Specials area. Homeroom classes will rotate to one location each day and they will be the only class interacting with that teacher during class time. Art students will bring a bag of their own supplies to class. Equipment in P.E. and Music will be limited and will not be shared by students nor used by another class until it can be cleaned.

What percentage of MJE’s population has selected face-to-face learning?

For the first grading period, approximately 40% of our students elected to attend school through the F2F learning model. Students in F2F will work virtually until we are set to return on September 8, 2020.

Will students be able to bring water bottles?

All students are encouraged to bring their own water bottles to school. Drinking fountains will remain on for filling of water bottles. Our students will be encouraged to fill their bottles as needed. In circumstances where a child forgot their bottle, we will have some on hand for those instances.

Will students have computer lab?

Computer labs will not be used by classes during Phase 1 or reopening.

How long is Phase 1?

Phase 1 refers to the time our students begin operating on campus through the end of the first grading period. As it stands now, Phase 1 is Sept. 8 – Oct. 16. The Phase 1 dates for JH and HS are different as it ends with their first grading period and they are on 6 weeks grading periods where EL is on 9 week grading periods.

F2F Lunch

What will lunch look like at MJE?

Students will be distanced, and there will be visible markings and labels so that they are adequately spread out while entering, standing in line, eating, and exiting the cafeteria. To start, we feel we will be able to distance the students in our cafeteria. As F2F enrollment increases, to maximize the ability to distance, it may become necessary for students to eat at an alternate location, such as in their classrooms on certain days. There will be hand sanitizer available during lunch.

Will my child(ren) be able to bring lunch and a snack to school?

Yes. Students may bring their own lunches and snacks to school. However, students will not be allowed deliveries to be brought up during the day for a forgotten lunch and parents may not bring in food from the outside for their child’s lunch during Phase 1. Students will also keep their lunch bags with them instead of placing them in a common area in the classroom.

F2F Recess

Will students be able to use equipment at recess such as school equipment, balls from home, or playground structures?

Recess will still be a part of our students’ day during Phase 1. However, through this time period, we will not be able to play on the playground structures. Students will not be able to share equipment and personal equipment from home is not allowed. Teams will divide the playground into areas and will set up a daily rotation schedule for each homeroom to stay in a designated area.

Covid-19 Protocols

Is there any point during the day designated for a mask break if a student needs it?

Students in specified grade levels will have to wear proper face coverings throughout the school day. Students will have the opportunity to remove face coverings during their lunch times.

If a student is unable to wear a facial covering or a face shield, a medical professional note must be submitted to the campus nurse for verification that it is “medically contraindicated” for the student to be able to wear a facial covering or a face shield in the school setting. The nurse will notify the campus principal (Per Katy ISD website)

If a student or teacher has Covid symptoms and is sent home, will the rest of the class be quarantined until there is a test result, or will there need to be a positive test result before any action is taken?

Information obtained from the Katy ISD Covid 19 Safety Protocols

Reports of positive COVID tests for both employees and students are reported through the COVID-19 APP available via the My Katy cloud. Every report of a COVID-19 positive is examined and investigated to ensure the mitigation of spread occurs. Work sites and campuses that sustain a threshold of positives per the COVID-19 mitigation stages may result in a partial or total closure of the campus or work site until the site is thoroughly sanitized and disinfected.

Reports of more than one COVID-19 positive report will result in increased scrutiny to determine next steps, which may include the closure of a classroom, grade level, campus or work site. Students impacted by a temporary closure of a campus will continue their learning via the Intermittent School to Home learning plan provided in a virtual environment and supported by their campus teachers.

A student who tests positive for COVID-19 may report their test result via the District’s COVID-19 electronic self-report and should remain at home until negative for COVID-19. Each situation and determining who must quarantine will depend on the amount of interaction and proper use of PPE including facial coverings.

Will my child be able to hug his or her teacher? (Oh, this one will be hard.)

As of now, Katy ISD still remains in Phase 1 of reopening. Though our teachers would love to give students as many hugs as needed, we must continue to follow stated safety protocols. It is imperative to practice social distancing in efforts to minimize contact. Please share this with your child(ren) so they know what to expect upon returning to school. Please also know that we love all of our students, and we will continue to be innovative in finding new ways to show students just how much we love them and strive to make them feel welcome on a daily basis.

KVA

For KVA, the FAQ online says students will be provided hardcopy books specific to the student’s reading level. How will those be provided and how often?

We recently closed KVA enrollment and about half of the district opted for KVA. At MJE, a little over 60% percent of our students opted for KVA instruction. This has resulted in additional plans needed for all district KVA students. As a result, the district has decided to invest in online leveled books. More information about this will come through your classroom literacy teacher when it is available. Hard copies of books that need to be checked out will occur after September 8th.

For KVA, will students be able to purchase a lunch from the cafeteria, and if so, what is that procedure?

Curbside “Grab’n’Go” meals will be available to all Katy ISD students from August 19 through September 4, at 23 distribution sites, from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Students will be offered breakfast and lunch daily. Students can choose both meals or one meal. This option is available to students once per day. Duplicate meal requests at different distribution sites will not be allowed. Students can pick up their meals at any of the 23 food distribution sites most convenient for them. Students must have their student ID or proof of enrollment (with student ID number available) to receive a meal. School IDs for the 2020-2021 school year will be distributed by students’ home campuses during our Campus Grab’n’Go on August 17 and 18, more information to come.

Students enrolled in Katy Virtual Academy (KVA) will continue to have access to meals via a “Grab’n’Go” format beyond the first 3 weeks of school at designated food distribution sites. The KVA “Grab’n’Go” schedule for meal service beginning September 8, will be released soon by the district.

School Supplies

How will my child(ren) get their school supplies if they pre-ordered from our PTA?

We will be handing out ALL school supply packs for student in both KVA and F2F through our Grab’n’Go on August 17 & 18. Many of those supplies will be needed over the first few weeks of school so we are sending them home for all students.

What is the plan for students to get their school supplies to class on the first day they return for F2F? (particularly the younger grades)?

We encourage students to bring in a few items at a time in their backpacks each day to divide the load of supplies they have to carry to school/class. That way, it is more manageable for even the younger grades.
