Our Lady of the Mission
Whitford Parish - Sunday 5th July 2026
Sunday 5th July 2026: Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Next Sunday is the 12th July: Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Message from Fr Cyprian
Greetings and peace be with you.
Fr Cornelius and I warmly welcome you here at Our Lady of the Mission, Whitford Parish, parishioners and visitors alike. We pray and hope that you feel truly safe and at home in this our place of prayer, worship and personal encounter with our risen Lord. May the Holy Spirit ever pray in us more than we can ever imagine and bind us together in the love of our Heavenly Father. Over fifty years, Whitford Catholic Parish remains home to dozens of nationalities represented by our parishioners and frequent visitors. We take pride in our young people; those in our parish primary and secondary schools, those enrolled in our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) and our parish youth group. They are not just our future Church but a vital part of our Church today and now. We value these our young people and endeavour to have their voices heard at every level of our administrative and pastoral engagements. We are ever grateful to the many individuals and groups that volunteer in various ministries of our parish life. To one and all, know that you are valued and appreciated in your own right. We cannot be what we are without you. Together, we continue to seek ways in which we can generously respond to that universal call to holiness of life in our families, parish community and in the society at large. I invite you and all your loved ones to be purposeful in this resolve. We must leave no one behind, those within and those on the peripheries. As always, Fr. Cornelius and I thank one and all of you for your ongoing prayers, concern, encouragement and support. Rest assured of our daily thoughts and prayers. We entrust you and yours, into the powerful intercessions of our Blessed Virgin Mother of Good counsel, and into those of St Joseph, patron of the universal Church.
Fr Cyprian M Shikokoti
Parish Priest.

Readings
Introduction
Today, Jesus offers to help us carry our burdens through life, and in gentle humility, to find rest for our weary souls.
First Reading: Zechariah 9:9-10
Zechariah prophesies the coming of a king who is humble and riding a donkey.
Second Reading: Romans 8:9. 11-13
True life comes through allowing the Spirit of God to live in us.
Gospel Matthew 11:25-30
Jesus calls us to rest in him, learning from his gentleness and humility.
Antiphon to the Psalm:
I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
Adsumus
This Sunday is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday,
inviting us to share the yoke of self-giving with Christ. Matthew’s Gospel is attentive to the poor, and this is a way of life that can only be understood by the meek and humble—those Jesus calls the ‘little ones’—rather than by the learned and clever. There is reward and blessing in this path, but it is the little ones who know it best and who alone can teach us. They show us how Christ’s yoke is easy and his burden light. This Sunday may our parish Adsumus Initiative remind us that this message is an invitation to sit at Jesus’ feet and learn from him.
Jesus is present wherever the Church gathers in his name: “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Mt 18:20). In Australia, the opening line of the Adsumus prayer, ‘We stand before you, Holy Spirit’ — long used at Church councils and, more recently, for the Synod on Synodality — builds a bridge between the Holy Spirit’s presence in the spiritual heritage of First Australians and the living presence of Jesus for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In doing so, it powerfully echoes Christ’s promise to be present in the gathered assembly.
By asking the Holy Spirit to guide, unite, and enlighten, the Adsumus prayer resonates with the Aboriginal understanding of God as the ‘Creator Spirit’ or ‘Great Spirit,’ present in this land from the beginning. It also points to why our First Nations Catholics are the youngest and fastest growing demographic in the Australian Catholic Church.
All this reveals the Spirit at work within and through culture, affirming that God was present in the lives of Indigenous peoples long before missionaries arrived. It calls us to communal, Spirit-led, inclusive dialogue, inviting the Holy Spirit to unite and heal the wounds of history.
Prayer for Aboriginal People
Father of all, you gave us the Dreaming.
You have spoken to us through our beliefs.
You then made your love clear to us in the
person of Jesus.
We thank you for your care.
You own us.
You are our hope.
Make us strong as we face the problems of change.
We ask you to help the people of Australia to listen
to us and respect our culture.
Make the knowledge of you grow strong in all
people, so that we can make a home for
everyone in our land.
Amen

“Let all Your works give You thanks, Oh Lord, and let Your faithful ones Bless You,” says the Psalmist. Stewardship is this “attitude of gratitude” for many gifts God has given us.

READINGS AT MASS: FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR A
First reading: Zechariah 9:9-10
See now, your king comes humbly to you
The Lord says this: Rejoice heart and soul, daughter of Zion! Shout with gladness, daughter of Jerusalem! See now, your king comes to you; he is victorious, he is triumphant, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will banish chariots from Ephraim and horses from Jerusalem; the bow of war will be banished. He will proclaim peace for the nations. His empire shall stretch from sea to sea, from the River to the ends of the earth.
Responsorial Psalm: Ps. 144(145):1-2,8-11,13b-14
Response: I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.
I will give you glory, O God my king, I will bless your name for ever. I will bless you day after day and praise your name for ever. R.
The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. R.
All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and your friends shall repeat their blessing. They shall speak of the glory of your reign and declare your might, O God. R.
The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down. R.
Second reading: Romans 8:9,11-13
If by the Spirit you put an end to the misdeeds of the body, you will live
Your interests are not in the unspiritual, but in the spiritual, since the Spirit of God has made his home in you. In fact, unless you possessed the Spirit of Christ you would not belong to him, and if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then he who raised Jesus from the dead will give life to your own mortal bodies through his Spirit living in you. So then, my brothers, there is no necessity for us to obey our unspiritual selves or to live unspiritual lives. If you do live in that way, you are doomed to die; but if by the Spirit you put an end to the misdeeds of the body you will live.
Gospel Acclamation: Matthew 11:25
Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom. Alleluia
Gospel Reading: Matthew 11:25-30
You have hidden these things from the wise and revealed them to little children
Jesus exclaimed, ‘I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to mere children. Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’
WE PRAY AS ONE: ADSUMUS SANCTE SPIRITUS
We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name. With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts; Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it. We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder. Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions. Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right. All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever, Amen.
POPE LEO XIV REFLECTIONS
Greetings, my brothers and sisters in Christ,
In today’s Gospel, Jesus says: “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Mt 11:28). The Lord does not reserve this phrase for certain friends of his, no; he addresses it to “all” those who are weary and overwhelmed by life. And who could feel excluded from this invitation? The Lord knows how arduous life can be.
He knows that many things weary the heart: disappointments and wounds of the past, burdens to carry and wrongs to bear in the present, uncertainties and worries about the future.
In the face of all this, Jesus’ first word is an invitation, a call to move and respond: “Come”. The mistake, when things go wrong, is to stay where we are, lying there. It seems obvious, but how difficult it is to respond and open ourselves! It is not easy. In dark times it feels natural to keep to ourselves, to ruminate over how unfair life is, over how ungrateful others are, how mean the world is, and so on. We all know it. We have had this awful experience a few times. But in this way, locked up inside ourselves, we see everything as grim. Then we even grow accustomed to sadness, which becomes like home: that sadness overcomes us; this sadness is a terrible thing. Jesus, however, wants to pull us out of this “quicksand” and thus says to each one: “Come! — Who? — You, you, you”. The way out is in connecting, in extending a hand and lifting our gaze to those who truly love us.
In fact it is not enough to come out of ourselves; it is important to know where to go. Because many aims are illusory: they promise comfort and distract just a little; they guarantee peace and offer amusement, then leave us with the loneliness there was before; they are “fireworks”. Therefore Jesus indicates where to go: “Come to me”. And many times, in the face of a burden of life or a situation that saddens us, we try to talk about it with someone who listens to us, with a friend, with an expert.... This is a great thing to do, but let us not forget Jesus. Let us not forget to open ourselves to him and to recount our life to him, to entrust people and situations to him. Perhaps there are “areas” of our life that we have never opened up to him and which have remained dark, because they have never seen the Lord’s light.
When Jesus enters life, peace arrives, the kind that remains even in trials, in suffering. Let us go to Jesus; let us give him our time; let us encounter him each day in prayer, in a trusting and personal dialogue; let us become familiar with his Word; let us fearlessly rediscover his forgiveness; let us eat of his Bread of Life: we will feel loved; we will feel comforted by him.
It is he himself who asks it of us, almost insists on it. He repeats it again at the end of today’s Gospel: “learn from me, and you will find rest for your life” (cf. v. 29). And thus, let us learn to go to Jesus. May the Virgin Mary our Mother, who always takes care of us when we are weary and overwhelmed, help us and accompany us to Jesus.
