REMINDERS

TABLETS: We will continue to keep tablets through testing season. This has been working great and has alleviated the stress of not having them charged. Thanks for your support!

SUPPLIES: As the end of the year approaches, please talk to your student about what to do with any extra materials they have in their lockers as we start cleaning them out. Teachers are always accepting donations but know hand-me-downs are the best! Please have that conversation so kids know if they should bring them home or if they can donate to the classrooms. Thank you!

SPRING: Although the weather is getting nicer, we still have plenty of school left. Please encourage your child to finish strong, keep their Tiger Traits, and practice healthy habits to be successful until the end!

BACKPACKS: Please send backpacks to school with kids daily. We will slowly start cleaning out lockers and will send things home a little at a time. Please encourage your child to empty them of the extra things they don't need for school each night. Your support and reminders will ensure we don't have kids bringing garbage bags full of stuff home on the last day!

FIELD TRIP FIELD TRIP

Pipestone

The 5th grade class, along with the 5th grade advisory teachers and support staff, will be heading to Pipestone, MN. Students will be visiting the Pipestone National Monument to learn more about Native American significance and religious beliefs of the region, their cultures and traditions, as well as the different types of rocks that can be found there and their purpose/use for the Native Americans. Students will get to tour the grounds as well as the video and museum inside the tourist center. Lunch and an annual advisory photoshoot will take place at the historic Three Maiden’s. A spot that consists of three very large rocks with significance to the Native American’s that live/lived in the area. Students will also get the opportunity to travel to the Pipestone County Museum where they will learn more about what it would have been like to live in Southwestern Minnesota during the early parts of our country and state’s establishment. They’ll get to see what a house would have looked like on the prairie, ways of living, as well as how they both evolved over the years. The final stop on the trip will be to Fort Pipestone where students will be greeted by staff and a story of the history of the fort and why it was built. Every year the staff and students look forward to this trip and the information and memories that are made on it.

Please be on the look-out for a lunch questionnaire/permission form to be returned to your child's advisor.

How You Can Help

  • Ensure your child gets a good sleep the weeks of testing. It's a long five weeks, and rest is a must!
  • Ensure they eat a healthy breakfast the mornings of testing (if able--we have breakfast options at school too)!
  • Make sure your child gets to school on time. Block 1 starts at 8:00 AM sharp.
  • Send them off to school with a word of encouragement. They CAN do hard things!

What We Are Learning What We Are Learning

SCIENCE

Science students will be taking the MCA test on April 30-May 2. Please remember to have your child get a good night’s sleep and breakfast in the morning!

After testing, your child will be doing an Inventors project, and ecosystem project, and ending the year with experiments. Stay tuned as many of the students may need to bring a few materials for this!

LANGUAGE ARTS

In Language Arts, we will end our season of testing with the NWEA spring test. Although it's only one small data point in a year's worth of learning, it's always fun to see how they've grown academically. In between testing and test prep, we will be reading a novel called Number the Stars. We will focus on comparing elements of stories (characters, plot, setting, etc.). We will also be studying figurative language and poetry as we finish the year strong!

MATH

In May, we will be introducing some 6th grade standards, doing projects and gearing up for the Spring NWEA test. It has been a fun year watching these kids grow!

BAND/ORCHESTRA

Orchestra: Orchestra students will be presenting their final performance for the year on Thursday May 23rd. This is the All-District Concert at the High School.

In the classroom, students are learning how to improvise. Some students will demonstrate their soloing skills at the concert.

Band:We are continuing our work on the Concert Bb scale. We are also working on some fun, recognizable music for our next concert.

Band Concert: May 16

Orchestra Concert: May 23

PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH

Phy. Ed.-In PE we are so happy to finally get outside and enjoy our activities in the sunshine. To end the school year we will play kickball, ultimate frisbee, and many student's favorite-soccer! When the weather doesn't cooperate, we will stay inside and play nitro ball, or yard games such as bean bags, spike ball, and disc bonk. We also will complete our fitness tests again in hopes of seeing some improvements since the beginning of 3rd quarter.

Health: In Health we will wrap up the school year with a nutrition unit. Students will complete a couple of fun assignments where they get to create their own nutritional food plates and will present a fitness or health app to our peers as well. We will end with a Sleep unit and will learn how important is it to keep a similar sleep schedule even in the summer.

MEDIA ARTS

Hello families!

We’re a good bit into the quarter now, and the students are well on their way to creating their games! Many students are making prototypes and are playtesting the games they made. The end goal, of course, is to design the games & directions in Canva as sort of a “final product.” Soon we’ll begin working on Board Game Advertisements, then Minecraft Cities after that!

Sincerely and affably,

Z. Bauer

MUSIC

We are currently studying the Elements of Music. The Elements of Music describe what music is and how we perceive it. They are the fundamental components that serve as the essential building blocks for all musical compositions.
