Units of Study

ELA/Writing:

In Module 2 students will listen to, read, and view a variety of texts and media that present them with different ways to tell a story. A genre focus on fiction provides students with opportunities to identify characters, setting, plot, and conflict in order to better understand unfamiliar texts. Students will also encounter poetry, myth, and fantasy/adventure to build knowledge across genres. As students build their vocabulary and synthesize topic knowledge, they will learn that the elements of a great story can be found in literature of all genres. To frame studentsโ€™ thinking before writing a narrative in this module, they will think about how there are many ways to tell a story.

Social Studies:

In this unit, students will explore the Northeast region of the United States. They will learn to locate the region on a map and identify key political features. Additionally, students will delve into the physical and climate characteristics of the Northeast, analyze its natural resources and economic activities, and describe the historical and cultural aspects of the population. Finally, they will examine life in the Northeast today, focusing on significant features and representative landmarks. The ultimate goal is for students to be able to develop a mental map of the Northeast region, as well as explain how where we live influences how we live in the context of the Northeast region

Math:

Students will start to consider the structure or characteristics of numbers by considering whether a number is prime or composite and identifying the prime factorization of a number. Additionally, students will explore how to represent and solve real-world problems using division. Students will use their understanding of whole number computation and decimal number sense to determine appropriate strategies to solve decimal division problems while justifying their estimates and solutions to problems. Students will discover decimal computation is used every day and will be provided opportunities to determine when it is appropriate to use mental math, paper, pencil, or a calculator and use methods that make sense to themselves and others.

Science:

This unit continues studentsโ€™ study of forms of energy and how they transfer and transform. In this unit, students will explore moving objects, beginning with the concept that moving objects possess kinetic energy (the energy of motion). They will learn that motion is characterized by both the direction and speed of an object, and how changes in motion are influenced by the net force acting on an object and its mass. Students will investigate the effect of collisions, the role of friction, and its importance to everyday life. These fundamental principles of motion, known as Newtonโ€™s Laws, will serve as a foundation for further exploration and learning in middle and high school.
