Tips for the English Language Arts Test Grades 3-5
RACE Strategy: Focusing on the "R" and "A"
Dear Fairfax Families,
We’re just days away from the Ohio State Test (OST) in English Language Arts (ELA) for our students in Grades 3–5! Please mark your calendars:
-
Tuesday, April 15: ELA Part I (Grades 3–5)
-
Thursday, April 17: ELA Part II (Grades 3–5)
As your child prepares, we continue to reinforce the RACE strategy in class—an effective way for students to construct strong written responses. Todays we’re focusing on the first two letters: R and A.
R = Restate the Question
Students begin their answer by turning the question into a statement. This helps keep their response focused and clear.
Example:
Question: What is the main idea of the passage?
Response starter: The main idea of the passage is...
A = Answer the Question
After restating, students need to directly answer the question being asked.
Example (continued):
The main idea of the passage is that teamwork can solve big problems.
Encouraging your child to use R and A when responding to questions at home—even in everyday conversation—can build habits that lead to strong test performance.
We are proud of how hard our students have been working. Thank you for all you do at home to support them—getting them to school on time, ensuring they get a good night’s rest, and providing encouragement along the way.
Let’s keep the momentum going!
Warmly,
Dr. Walker
