April Fools!

This year there was no shortage of April Fools jokes here at school! Students were given silly spelling words on their tests, they could be caught outside holding carrots in the air singing and flapping their arms trying to catch a glimpse of the elusive Lirpa Loof bird...(which they later learned was April Fool backwards), and they were even served "brownies" that turned out to be brown-E's! What great sports we have! One school-wide elementary prank they all endured was our "Flood Drill!" You should definitely ask your child if they 'fell for it'!!

Book It!!

As a school, 98% of our elementary students reached their personal goals! This is our HIGHEST percentage yet! I'm so very proud of every single one of our students who met their goal for the month - WAY TO GO!

Feel The Love Friday - Stacy Stewart

Stacy Stewart was recently nominated by one of our amazing S-RC families for Feel The Love Friday! This is where "Nebraska Loves Public Schools," a nonprofit organization dedicated to sharing the stories of schools today, highlights an educator from across the state and tells HOW they are making a difference. We are so honored to have Mrs. Stewart here at S-RC. If you happen to see her out an about, please congratulate her for this HUGE honor, and thank her for all of the work she puts in with our students, teachers, and staff. She is a phenomenal example of the type of truly selfless staff we have here at S-RC! Thank you, Stacy. I'm so glad that our paths have crossed!

IXL Superstars

Each week, we highlight IXL Superstars. These are students at each grade level who have answered the MOST questions on IXL at their appropriate level. Teachers (both grade level and WIN level teacher) assign IXL strands to students throughout the weeks. Students then can work on these skills during the school day AND at home! On Friday mornings, during announcements, IXL Superstars are called over the intercom and get to come down to the office to get a blowpop and have their picture taken for Twitter and have their paw OR star with their name and number of questions answered hung on the Wall of Fame for all to see! Ask your child if they have made it to the wall yet!

April 4th = School Librarian Appreciation Day!!!

We are so lucky here at S-RC to have the best of the best when it comes to School Librarians! Mrs. Peterson is truly a DIAMOND! April 4th is School Librarian Appreciation Day - please join me in THANKING Mrs. Peterson for all that she does for ALL of our students on Monday!!

Kindergarten Round-Up

Any child turning 5 on or before July 31st, 2022 is eligible for kindergarten!! If you plan on sending your child to Shelby-Rising City Kindergarten next fall, please call Camille in our school's office at (402) 527-5946 ext 5717 and provide your name, your child's name, their birthday, and your address to register and be added to our mailing list to receive additional information as the school year approaches.

We will hold Kindergarten Registration on Friday, April 22nd. Both morning and afternoon sessions are available. The kindergarten handbook will be reviewed, registration forms will be handed out (to be completed by the 22nd (or even that same day if you'd like!)). Parents are encouraged to bring:

  • kindergarten physical documentation - that can be completed by any physician,
  • up to date immunization records, and
  • child's original birth certificate issued by the Bureau of Vital Statistics (we will make a copy for our records).

Letters confirming your registration session will be mailed on or around April 11th.

As we move closer and closer to "Testing Season"

I hope that you will encourage your child to put forth their best efforts over the coming weeks as they prepare for the upcoming tests. Please remember that these assessments provide us with important information that we can use to improve education for your child and for all students. For example, if we find that a significant number of students in a grade level are struggling with a math concept, we may look at new approaches to teaching the concept or different instructional resources to use to support student learning.

More importantly, please take some time to calm your child's nerves, if they are nervous about the upcoming tests. It is so important to me that they understand that I know the people who made this test and score this test do not know them like we know them. They do not know that students at S-RC are kind to others and have the ability to make others laugh and smile, or that some of them can even speak two languages! They do not know that some of our students play sports and even play so well that they earn medals and trophies! They do not know that our students are trustworthy, and thoughtful, and simply awe inspiring. They do not know that everyday our students try their very best, even when things are hard.

The scores our students get will tell us something, but they will not tell us everything. These tests will never define our students. They will never define the drive and determination behind every single one of our students and every single one of our teachers.

I know that the growth we see on the tests will make me proud - but even more than what we see on the test - the students at S-RC themselves simply MAKE ME PROUD day in and day out! Please make sure that your children know that! I will do my best to make sure that they know that on my end as well. THANK YOU!

End of the Year Testing is Coming!!

Here is a list of testing dates separated by grade level - please check out your child's grade level and mark your calendar at home to make sure that your child either has a great breakfast before they come to school OR arrives here early enough to eat breakfast at school.

Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month, and here at Shelby-Rising City Public Schools we strive to always provide an inclusive and supportive environment for all. One way we can do that is by ensuring that students and families understand what abilities and disabilities are within our school. I would love for you to take some time to visit the AutismSpeaks website and learn more about the Kindness Campaign that you could sign up for for the month of April!

You can also learn just a little bit more about autism in the graphics below!

10 Ways to Help Your Child Make Wise Decisions

1. Give your child the opportunity to make choices about food, clothes, and other non-critical areas, even when it's easier to simply issue a command.

2. Ask for your child's opinion about what should be done in various situations.

3. Let your child be the one to decide if more practice on a task or skill is needed before trying something harder.

4. Allow your child to decide how to solve problems, even though you would find it quicker to provide a solution. Explore together the possible consequences if certain choices are made.

5. Let your child offer concrete evidence to show a readiness for new privileges or responsibilities.

6. When conflicts arise, request that your child take responsibility for resolving them in a way that will work for all involved.

7. If your child is angry, have them cool down rather than make a rash decision.

8. Give your child the space to make poor (but not life threatening) decisions. Children, like us all, learn from mistakes.

9. Offer your support and understanding when your child makes mistakes. Then discipline as needed.

10. Acknowledge your child's good decisions. Point them out when made and refer to them when future decisions are required.

Remember: Wise decision-making comes from practice and encouragement!
