From Mrs. Jones

🐯 Hello, DMS Families and Friends!

October is here, and we have a busy and exciting month ahead at Demopolis Middle School! As we wrap up the first nine weeks, I want to thank our families for your continued support. Please take a few minutes to review the important dates, reminders, and celebrations below.

📚 First Nine Weeks Exam Schedule

Our first nine weeks exams are coming up. Please make every effort to have your student at school and on time each day.

October 6 – Science & ELA Exams
October 7 – Social Studies & Math Exams
October 8 – Make-Up Exams

Please remember that October 8 is still a regular school day for all students, even if they do not have an exam to make up.

📅 Upcoming Dates

October 9 – Professional Day – No Students
October 12–13 – Fall Break 🍂
October 15 – Report Cards Go Home
October 23 – Homecoming 🐯🏈
October 26 – First Club Day

Homecoming dress-up days will be shared as soon as Demopolis High School determines the themes for the week. We look forward to celebrating Homecoming with our students!

📝 Mandatory Signature Pages

We are still missing some mandatory signature pages. If you have not completed your student's form, please do so as soon as possible. https://forms.gle/W1hoHp4YNU6NRcZz7

These forms provide us with important information and permissions, including whether your student's picture may be posted on the school's social media pages. We want to make sure we have accurate information for every student, so your help with completing these forms is greatly appreciated.

🌱 Learning Is Growing at DMS!

We now have 12 new raised garden beds that are part of Miss Golden's science elective class.

While the garden beds will be an important part of the science elective, they are not just for science! Our goal is for teachers in all subject areas to utilize the garden beds to provide students with engaging, hands-on learning experiences that are aligned with the Alabama Courses of Study. Whether students are applying math skills, conducting scientific investigations, writing about their observations, or making connections to other content areas, the garden beds will provide another opportunity to take learning beyond the walls of the classroom.

We are excited to watch both our garden and our students grow! 🌱🐯

🌟 Celebrating Our Students

We have several exciting things planned for October!

We will recognize our Tiger Elite students—please see the flyer below for more information. We will also have a Tardy Party to celebrate students who have zero unexcused tardies to school AND to class. We want to recognize students who consistently make it to school and class on time!

💛 Spina Bifida Awareness – October 7

October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month, and on October 7, we are asking our DMS family to wear yellow in recognition of Spina Bifida Awareness.

We especially want to honor our own Jaiden Morgan and all of the amazing spina bifida warriors in our community and beyond. Please encourage your student to wear yellow and help us show our support! 💛

🎨🎮📚 Club Days Are Coming to DMS!

One of our very own students, Mac McDowell, came up with the idea of offering clubs at DMS, and we loved it! We gathered input from our students about the types of clubs they would be interested in joining, and we are excited to make Club Days a reality. *Students with missing assignments will meet with Mrs. Jones to complete those assignments before attending Club Day.

Club Day will take place on the last Monday of each month during third-period advisory, with our first Club Day scheduled for October 26! We are excited to give students an opportunity to explore their interests, try something different, and connect with students and teachers outside of their regular classes.

🏐🏈🏀 DMS Athletics

Volleyball season has officially come to a close, and we are proud of our players and coaches for representing DMS throughout the season!

We still have two football games remaining, so come out and support our Tigers as they finish their season. 🐯🏈 After football wraps up, it will be time for basketball season! 🏀

🍂 Fall Break Is Almost Here!

As we finish the first nine weeks, please continue encouraging your student to stay focused, complete assignments, prepare for exams, and finish the grading period strong.

Thank you for your continued support of Demopolis Middle School. We have so many wonderful things happening at DMS, and we appreciate having our families as partners in making our school a great place for our students.

📢IMPORTANT REMINDERS📢 📢IMPORTANT REMINDERS📢

📣 We Need Your Help With a Few Reminders

As we begin a new nine weeks, there are a few issues that continue to occur at school. We need your help reinforcing these expectations at home.

⏰ Unexcused Tardies

Students are considered tardy to school after 7:45 a.m. If your child arrives after 7:45, a parent should walk the student inside and sign an excuse, or the student must bring a written excuse with him or her.

Please remember:

  • After three unexcused tardies, a student will receive one day of in-school suspension (SAP).

  • Parents will be notified when a student has accumulated two to three unexcused tardies, but we would greatly appreciate your help in preventing students from reaching that point.

  • Tardy excuses must be turned in on the day the student is tardy. They cannot be submitted at a later date.

The solution is simple: please help your student arrive at school on time, or send a note with your student if there is a reason for the tardiness.

👕 Dress Code

We continue to see a few recurring dress code issues. Please help us by checking your student's clothing before he or she leaves for school.

For girls, the primary issue continues to be shirts worn with leggings that are too short. Shirts worn with leggings must provide appropriate coverage in both the front and back.

For boys, we continue to address sagging pants and muscle shirts.

Sunglasses are not permitted inside the school. Students will be asked to remove them, and refusal to follow that direction will be considered defiance.

Please discuss these expectations with your student. Your support at home helps us spend less time addressing dress code issues and more time focused on learning.

📚 Classwork, Homework & Grades

Please remind your student that completing assignments and meeting deadlines are important parts of being successful in school. If work is not completed and turned in by the deadline, the student will receive a zero for that assignment.

While we are responsible for teaching academic standards, we are also working to teach our students responsibility, organization, and the importance of meeting deadlines—skills they will need throughout high school and beyond.

Remember that students have an opportunity during third period each day to complete assignments. Please encourage your student to take advantage of this time, particularly if he or she has missing or incomplete work.

Cell Phones📱

Cell Phones should be turned off and locked in the Yonder pouch when students arrive on campus.
