Join us for a story!

In January, Mineral Point Elementary will be hosting a weekly community read via Zoom. Each week, a guest reader will read aloud a picture book. Families who sign up will receive a personal copy of the text. An opportunity to talk about the book with others will be set up in Zoom. Below are the books.

  • Thursday, January 14, 6:30 P.M.: Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal
  • Thursday, January 21, 6:30 P.M.: Your Name Is a Song by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow and Luisa Uribe

  • Thursday, January 28, 6:30 P.M.: Speak Up by Miranda Paul and Ebony Glenn
  • Thursday, February 4, 6:30 P.M.: Evelyn del Ray is Moving Away by Meg Medina and Sonia Sanchez

In addition, older readers can share their thinking about the chapter book Dragons in a Bag by Zetta Elliott within Padlet and Flipgrid. This can happen on their own time.

The Name is a Song

Frustrated by a day full of teachers and classmates mispronouncing her beautiful name, a little girl tells her mother she never wants to come back to school. In response, the girl's mother teaches her about the musicality of African, Asian, Black-American, Latinx, and Middle Eastern names on their lyrical walk home through the city. Empowered by this newfound understanding, the young girl is ready to return the next day to share her knowledge with her class. Your Name is a Song is a celebration to remind all of us about the beauty, history, and magic behind names.

Evelyn del Ray is Moving Away

Evelyn Del Rey is Daniela's best friend. They do everything together and even live in twin apartments across the street from each other: Daniela with her mami and hamster, and Evelyn with her mami, papi, and cat. But not after today--not after Evelyn moves away. Until then, the girls play amid the moving boxes until it's time to say goodbye, making promises to keep in touch, because they know that their friendship will always be special. The tenderness of Meg Medina's beautifully written story about friendship and change is balanced by Sonia Sánchez's colorful and vibrant depictions of the girls' urban neighborhood.
