Budget Update Budget Update

A note from Superintendent Deborah Rumbaugh

Hello Marysville School District Families,

You may have heard that school districts across Washington are facing budget challenges, and I want to share a brief update on what that means for us.

Like many districts, we are seeing a gradual decline in student enrollment. This is happening for a few reasons—there are fewer school-age children due to declining birth rates, and some families are choosing different educational options.

The good news is that our enrollment decline this year is slightly lower than in recent years, a positive sign. Importantly, this is not unique to our district. School systems across the state—and even the country—are experiencing similar trends.

At the same time, I’m pleased to share that through improved financial practices and careful planning, our district is making strong progress. Based on guidance from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), we are on track to be out of binding financial conditions within the next 2 years.

We will continue to plan thoughtfully to support students, maintain strong programs, and use our resources responsibly. As always, we will keep you informed along the way.

Return of Middle School Sports, Unified Sports and C-Teams

By now, you’ve heard about our ability to restore Middle School Sports for the 2026-2027 school year. In addition, we are pleased to announce that, based on community feedback, we will fund Unified Sports and C-teams at our High Schools.

This means that outside groups and/or booster clubs will no longer bear this responsibility.

We are grateful for the efforts taken to support these programs, but are even more thankful to be funding these as a matter of principle. These additional expenditures will be offset by overall district reductions as determined between now and the end of June.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Deborah Rumbaugh, Ed.D.

Superintendent

Shout-out to our Tribal liaisons!

Our Tribal Liaisons play an important role in our schools. Tribal Liaisons are staff members who work closely with students, families, and school teams to help build strong relationships and provide support where it’s needed most.

They connect with students to help them feel welcomed, supported, and successful in school. They also partner with families and staff to strengthen communication and ensure that students’ needs are understood and met.

In addition, our Tribal Liaisons work closely with the Tulalip Tribes, helping us build strong, respectful partnerships and ensuring that tribal voices, culture, and perspectives are honored in our schools.

Much of their work happens behind the scenes, but the impact is meaningful and lasting. We are grateful for their care, advocacy, and commitment to supporting students and families every day.

Too many young people go without the mental health support they need, unwillingly thrust into a cycle known as the cradle-to-prison pipeline.

Join the Marysville School District Mentorship Program and trauma-informed care expert Frank Grijalva for a presentation and discussion about interrupting the flow of cyclical trauma, and how you can be part of the growing effort in our community to strengthen connections and embrace solutions that directly support youth.

Sessions are free, with multiple available. Childcare is available for some of the sessions. Registration is required. Learn more and register by clicking HERE.

The MSD Campus Crew is back for a spring cleanup on Saturday, April 25, in honor of Earth Day!

The crew will be supporting cleanup efforts from 2 - 4pm at Marysville Getchell, as well as at the Marysville-Tulalip Campus around 10th Street, Legacy and Heritage. We'll be picking up garbage, pulling weeds, spreading mulch, and connecting with members of our community.

Register here: https://forms.gle/Ks6d81wX9pTWdz3j9

If you can't make it, we hope you can help us spread the word to folks in our community who may want to join us. The event is open to all.

The Campus Crew team will be providing some gloves, buckets, trash grabbers, and water refill stations/snack bars as needed. We encourage anyone who wants to come to bring your own water bottle, work gloves, garden tools, or buckets if you've got them.

What is Campus Crew?
The MSD Campus Crew is a group of volunteers from across the Marysville School District with the goal of strengthening connections in our community as we care for our campuses and offer helping hands to support efforts to keep them clean. This initiative, developed in partnership with a group of district and school staff, is meant to build a culture of shared care to keep our campuses beautiful for all.

At Quil Ceda Tulalip Elementary, some 6th graders are having a mini-microphone moment, making a splash across their school.

That’s because, since January, 6th graders in Miss Ava’s class have been writing and starring in The Orca Current, a student-led news show.

Miss Ava started the project to get more students to work together and socialize outside of their friend groups. While she supervises and provides minimal support, students take the lead in researching events and topics to explore within their school and community. Each student present is actively involved, whether it’s through the research process, script drafting/publishing, exploring possible segment focuses, or speaking. They even have a designated orca mascot!

“We have received a ton of positive feedback from younger students and I think the episodes unite the school. The 6th graders are learning that younger ones look up to them and I think its helping them to become better leaders,” said Miss Ava.

Students are invested in the show and care deeply about how each episode turns out. They’re learning how to collaborate with peers for a shared goal, gaining more experience researching and writing, and exploring new ways to express themselves creatively. The effort reaches past one classroom, with interview segments bringing in more of the school community each episode.

“One student was testing the microphones and asked another student what they were most excited about for our project. They responded, ‘We’re working as a team and this is bringing all of us together,’ and I think this shows exactly why we’re doing this and what they’re learning,” Miss Ava added.

So far, her class has done one episode per month since January, but she hopes that they will become more frequent as students become more familiar with the process and that The Orca Current continues to grow beyond just this school year!
