What an absolutely incredible few days we had at Outdoor Education! It is hard to put into words just how much fun the students had. From the moment we arrived, the excitement was contagious, and the kids jumped right into every activity with enthusiasm and energy.

One of the most special parts of the trip was watching the friendships between our Heritage students and the Summit View students blossom. It was amazing to see kids who had just met quickly become teammates, encouragers, and friends. They cheered each other on during challenges, laughed together during games, and supported one another every step of the way.

The students experienced so many moments they will remember for the rest of their lives. They bravely climbed the high ropes course, practiced their aim at archery, danced their hearts out at the barn dance, played epic games of football, and spent time simply enjoying the freedom of playing and exploring in the woods. We wrapped up our final evening gathered around a campfire, roasting s’mores, and sharing laughs together, which was the perfect ending to an unforgettable trip.

I could not be more proud of our kids. Many of them showed incredible bravery stepping outside their comfort zones and embracing this adventure away from home. They encouraged one another, tried new things, and showed what it truly means to support their classmates.

I also want to sincerely thank all of you for entrusting us with your precious children for a few days. We know how big of a step it can be to send them off on a trip like this, and we truly appreciate your trust and support. It was such a privilege to share this experience with them and watch them grow in confidence, independence, and friendship.

These are the kinds of experiences that stay with kids forever, and it was such a joy to watch them grow, connect, and create memories together.

Heritage raised the most money of all the elementary schools in our feeder area for MVHS Wish Week! We are so proud of our students and families for their generosity and support. To celebrate this amazing accomplishment, we will be having a Disney Day at school! Students are invited to wear their favorite Disney attire or dress up as their favorite Disney character for the day.

A couple reminders:

  • No masks

  • No face paint

And the best part… there is no cost to participate!

What We Are Learning What We Are Learning

Reading

After Spring Break, we will begin Unit 5, Week 1 of Wonders, which connects nicely with what we are learning in science. Students will read informational texts while practicing how to identify the central idea and the relevant details that support it. We will also focus on using text features, especially diagrams and visual models, to better understand scientific ideas. Students will practice asking and answering questions while they read and using evidence from the text and diagrams to support their thinking.

We have also started our class novel, Front Desk, and the students are already really enjoying it! We are exploring the powerful themes in the story while also learning how to annotate text as we read. This is an important skill that will help prepare them for the reading expectations they will encounter in middle school.

Math

We have begun our unit on converting measurements. Students are currently learning the customary units of measurement (inches, feet, yards, miles, ounces, pounds, cups, etc.) and how to convert between them. After Spring Break, we will transition into working with the metric system as well.

Understanding measurement and how to convert between units is an important skill students will use throughout their lives. From cooking and building to science and everyday problem-solving, these are practical math skills that help students make sense of the world around them.

Writing

In writing, students recently completed a color poem project. In this assignment, students explored how poets use imagery and descriptive language to help readers visualize and feel what they are describing. Each student chose a color and wrote a poem that captured the sights, feelings, and experiences that color might represent.

Students worked hard to select strong, vivid words and carefully considered how their line breaks and word choices could impact the reader. It was a fun way for students to experiment with poetry while also thinking deeply about how language can create powerful images in a reader’s mind.

Social Studies/Science

In science, we have begun our study of space and the solar system. Students are learning about the sun, planets, moons, and other objects in our solar system, and how gravity and motion keep everything moving in predictable patterns.

We are exploring how the Earth, moon, and sun interact, including how these relationships create patterns such as day and night, the phases of the moon, and the seasons. Students are also learning how scientists use models and diagrams to better understand space and explain how objects in the solar system move and interact.

This unit encourages students to think like scientists as they ask questions, examine evidence, and build their understanding of the fascinating system we live in.
