Westmoor Weekly 05/08/26

Dear Westmoor Families,

On behalf of the Westmoor staff, a heartfelt thank you to our PTO and amazing community for the delicious breakfasts, lunches, and treats throughout this week. We are incredibly grateful for your generosity, support, and the appreciation you showed our staff. We truly felt the love!

Our famous watermelon countdown has officially begun! With just 17 school days remaining, there is still so much learning and excitement happening throughout the building. Teachers and students are working hard to finish the year strong by completing final assessments, celebrating growth and accomplishments, and previewing some of the exciting learning that awaits students next year. It has been wonderful to see the continued engagement, curiosity, and enthusiasm filling our classrooms as we make the most of these final weeks together.

Next week, we will have our Pack Meeting on Wednesday. Please remember to have your child wear their Pack tie-dye t-shirt.

In April, we proudly celebrated students who demonstrated respect through their words, actions, and positive choices each day. The students below consistently showed kindness to others, listened thoughtfully, followed expectations, and helped create a safe and supportive learning environment for everyone. We are so proud of the leadership and character they bring to our school community!

Each week students may submit a positive quote that captures and motivates their peers to persevere and feel good. We then showcase the quotes throughout the school building. Students may submit a quote, using this link.

Our Bulldog Pack Day is coming up on Tuesday, June 2nd. Students will get to choose a movie to attend in the afternoon. Please fill out the linked form to give permission for your child to watch a PG movie option. If you do not feel comfortable with a PG movie rating, your child will have G-rated movie options to choose from. Please complete this form for each child in your family by Friday, May 15th.

An important reminder that smart watches, like cell phones, should not be used for communication during the school day. We have seen an uptick in students using watches to text or communicate with others during class time and it is impacting the learning environment. Thank you for your support.

We’re excited to showcase the special moments and achievements of our students and their families. Whether it’s a holiday, cultural tradition, a child’s milestone like riding a bike without training wheels, a big win at a soccer game, welcoming a new pet, or anything else that makes you proud — we’d love to feature it! At the Board of Education meeting last week, the Board approved Reed Construction for the Build 28 projects slated for Westmoor. The approval comes after a bid process, in which the district formally invited qualified contractors to submit proposals. The district reviewed the bids and selected the most competitive and responsible contractor. Major construction at Westmoor is anticipated to begin this summer! Projected Construction Timeline

• April 2026 - June 2026: Westmoor Phase I construction begins
• Feb. 2027 - April 2027: Westmoor Phase I construction completed
  
• June 2027: Westmoor Phase II construction begins
  
• August 2027: Westmoor Phase II construction completed

Illinois State Board of Education School Code requires the following examinations:

Physical Examination and Immunizations: Required before Early Childhood, Kindergarten, 6th grade, and all students enrolling in a new school district. The physical exam must be completed within one year prior to the first day of school and should be filed with the school nurse by August 19th.

Sports Physicals: Required for students in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th who try out or participate in interscholastic sports activities including cheerleading. The child health exam required for 6th grade substitutes as the sports physical. The sports physical is good for one year, plus one month, from the date of the exam.

Dental Examination: Required for students in Kindergarten, 2nd grade, and 6th grade. The dental exam must be returned to school by May 15th but may be completed within 18 months prior to the May 15th deadline.

Vision Examination: Required for children in kindergarten and all students enrolling in a new school district. The vision exam must be returned to school by October 15th and must have been completed within 12 months prior to the October 15th deadline.

School Supplies for next year are for sale on the PTO website! THIS IS A CHANGE FROM PRIOR YEARS. Supply kits will be less expensive now, and we will be focusing on increasing our green efforts by reducing packaging, re-using supplies (if appropriate), and saving YOU time/. We have worked to make sure that supply kits are MORE affordable – and almost the same cost as buying them from the stores yourself! Kits averaged out to be approximately 20% cheaper than last year and will be delivered to your child’s classroom at the start of the year. A portion of the proceeds will support the PTO – consider donating your used and unused supplies at the end of the year so that we can reduce excess consumption. Orders due June 6th!

Thanks to all of you who attended the Annual District 28 Homer O. Harvey 5K Walk/Run on May 2 at NBJH! It was a chilly, but beautiful morning, and with your help, the District 28 PTO Council raised approximately $20,000!

Organized by our PTO Council, the run/walk raises funds for scholarships for District 28 alumni graduating from high school. It’s named after Homer O. Harvey, our district’s Superintendent from 1961 to 1988. When Dr. Harvey retired, the Board of Education and District PTO established this scholarship in his honor.

We celebrated our teachers and staff this week for Teacher and Staff Appreciation week. A few highlights and pictures below:

Every morning started with staff names being drawn for larger gift cards that our parents generously donated.

Monday - Breakfast from Egg Harbour with fruit trays from Sunset and OJ from Fresh Market.

Tuesday was snack day where we filled the lounge with hundreds of snacks and drinks.

Wednesday was Cabo build yourself Taco Bar.

Thursday - Candy Day

Friday – Lunch from Lou Malnati’s

Everyone on staff was also gifted a Westmoor branded fanny pack with gift certificates that our wonderful parents generously donated.

We have our final dine and share at Culver’s on May 14th! 25% of the proceeds will go back to the PTO! You must present the flyer – digitally or physically – in order for us to receive credit!
