October 27-November 2, 2024

Good morning Cannon families,

Your contributions to our PTA fundraisers have made a tremendous impact, Cub families are truly thankful! The Wise Guys Pizza Kits were a huge success, and we're excited to "Serve Up" LOVE in February with heart-shaped pizzas. Thank you for being an integral part of our Cannon Community!

This week, we join schools nationwide to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. We want this week to be fun and educational, but most importantly, we want our students to know it is OK to Say No To Drugs! Each day, we ask our Cubs to join us by dressing up and pledging to be Drug Free. Please remember that on October 31st, for Storybook Character Dress Up Day, no masks, props, or toy weapons are allowed.

We will end the week with our 4th annual STEMapalooza on Friday, November 1st - and we can't wait! It's an amazing day FULL of the Engineering Design Process! Please understand that volunteers are not needed for TEKS-aligned STEM Challenge Fair Day. If you are interested in eating lunch with your Cub, students will eat in the Cafe on this day, but we do have a slightly modified lunch schedule:

Kinder 10:40-11:10; 1st grade 11:10-11:40; 2nd grade 11:30-12:00; 3rd 11:50-12:20; 4th 12:20-12:50; 5th 12:50-1:20

It's always exciting to see engineered artifacts from home come together as a Kindergarten through fifth grade display for our STEM book challenges! They are rolling in and settling nicely in our "Under Water" Learning Commons! Plan with your scholar, use reusable or recycle materials around your home, and engineer an artifact to contribute to our Cannon "Over and Under the Waves" Home to School Engineering Design Display ( Fall STEM Design Challenge )!

PTA Calendar FUNdraiser Celebration!

Our PTA Calendar Fundraiser allowed our PTA to raise over $7,000! Leading classes and our leading grade-level (4th grade), we celebrate their HUGE contributions this Friday. On November 1st, after STEMapalooza, at 2:30, we will have a school assembly outside to watch the 4th-grade teachers PIE the Admin Team and then cheer on the classes that get to silly string one another!

*Parents of participating classes, with background checks, are welcome to attend and watch the silly string parties! See the link below to complete your background check.

We love partnering with scholars from other GCISD schools wanting to work with our fabulous Cubs! Lucy Allen from Collegiate Academy taught an AMAZING Math lesson for some of our 2nd grade scholars - they had a blast!

Happy Little Habitats

Have you ever thought about where our favorite water animals live? All animals need “Happy Little Habitats” in order to survive in their environment. We invite you to come use the Engineering Design Process to decide how you can help out our water friends.

Let’s design a Happy Little Habitat so that your water animal has enough room to live, using natural and manmade materials.

Salty Sea Water Circuits

What is a pirate's favorite letter in the alphabet? R?

No, it is actually the C (salt)! :)

Students will be creating a salty circuit! Once they complete the circuit with the salt to the LED light bulb, they will add water with food coloring to the salt and watch the magic begin! As the water flows through the trail of salt, it will become a conductor! This closes the circuit causing the LED bulb to light up! This allows students to be up to current with electrical engineering.

How can we as electrical engineers design a simple circuit using water?

Parents Can Manage Meal Payments Online Via MySchoolBucks App

GCISD’s Nutrition Services is pleased to announce that parents can now download the MySchoolBucks app to make online prepayments on their child’s school meal account and view transactions. There is a $3.25 processing fee for each transaction.

After downloading the app from the App Store or Google Play on their mobile device, parents will need the following to establish an account:

  • Visa, Mastercard or Discover credit cards

  • Child’s six- or seven-digit student ID number

Transactions made prior to 10 a.m. will be posted to the meal account the same day. Prepayments made after 10 a.m. will be posted the next school day.

Although the online option is available, parents will still continue to have the option to pay at their child’s school using cash or via check. There is no processing fee for payments at school.

If you need assistance with the meal account, please call GCISD Nutrition Services at 817-251-5617 or send an email to child.nutrition@gcisd.net.

Free and Reduced-Priced Meal Applications Are Still Accepted

Every dollar counts and if you qualify for free and reduced meals for your child, there is still time to complete an application. Applications are available at www.schoollunchapp.com and can be completed at any time during the school year. The sooner the application is completed and if you qualify, the sooner your child can begin to receive meals at the free or reduced price.
