Greyhound Freshman Focus-Interims

Dear Freshman Families,
It’s hard to believe, but we are at interim time. This means we are halfway through your student’s very first quarter of high school! How crazy is that?
Our teachers are currently working to update grades and provide an accurate picture of how students are doing so far. This is a great opportunity for you and your student to check grades together, celebrate successes, identify areas of concern, and make a plan for what comes next.
For some students, the plan may be to maintain the great work they are already doing. For others, it may be time to get organized, establish better study habits, seek additional help, communicate with a teacher, or make some adjustments before the quarter comes to an end. Whatever your student needs, now is the perfect time to take a step back, look at the big picture, and make a plan together.
Freshman year is a time of transition, growth, and learning-- not just academically, but also in learning how to manage the increased expectations and responsibilities of high school. We appreciate your partnership as we help our Greyhounds navigate this exciting first year of High School!

9th Grade Assistant Principal
This past week, our school counselors visited classrooms to talk with students about what “Success at GCHS” looks like and how they can take ownership of their experience. This is a great starting point for a conversation and check-in with your student as we approach interim time—ask them how they feel they are doing and what support they may need to be successful.
1. Don’t be afraid to talk to new people.
High school is a fresh start. Sit with someone new, introduce yourself, and don’t worry about what people think. You might meet some of your best friends that way.
2. Don’t procrastinate.
That assignment that’s due next week? Just do it.
3. Get involved.
High school is about more than just classes.
4. Your grades matter, but they aren’t everything.
Do your best but don’t let one bad grade make you feel like you’re failing at everything.
5. Don’t get caught up in drama.
There will ALWAYS be drama!! You don’t have to be part of it. Stay out of other people’s problems. It is okay to focus on yourself.
6. Ask for help when you need it.
Asking for help doesn’t make you look dumb.
7. Learn to manage your time.
Try google keep to track of what you need to do.
8.Be yourself.
The people who matter will like you for who you actually are.
9. Go to events.
You only get four years of high school. Some of your favorite memories will happen when you least expect them.
10. It goes by FAST.
Freshman year might feel like it’s going to last forever, but suddenly you’ll be a senior giving advice to the next freshman class. Make memories, take chances, laugh a lot, and enjoy the ride.
