O'Maley Family Focus
December 23, 2021
Dear O’Maley Families,
There is quite a lot to share as we wrap up 2021!
Students ended this calendar year with a treat as the GHS Docksiders and Choir performed for each grade level. The shows were amazing, and enjoyed by all. The GHS students and Music Director Cole Lundquist were kind enough to perform three separate times so that our students could enjoy both appropriate spacing and the show. It was wonderful to see so many of our former students in the ensembles. Thank you, GHS!
O'Maley Academy program rosters for the winter session were sent out today via email. Students should check their school email for information. No students were turned down, and we still have some spots open. If your child is interested in joining, have him/her/them email Ms. Matheson over the break at rmatheson@gloucesterschools.com.
I have shared below a few recent spirit celebratory activities that have gone on here at O'Maley. One of the most important aspects of middle school is participating with community members. Doing things like decorating doors with a winter SAILS theme or figuring out the most creative way to come to school without. a backpack but WITH all of their school belongings brings both fun and challenge to the school day, and inspires critical and creative thinking. Our guidance counselors do a wonderful job inspiring school spirit. Please enjoy the photos in the Slide presentations included below.
As we begin winter break I want to wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and joyful holiday season. Particularly with COVID back on the rise, please take precautions. We look forward to seeing everyone back on January 3rd to start up 2022!
Best,
Principal Lynne Beattie

Winter Wonderland of SAILS
Over the last couple of weeks O'Maley held its second annual door decorating contest wi the theme of Winter Wonderland of SAILS. Students and staff worked together to illustrate a winter theme showcasing our SAILS values of Service, Acceptance, Integrity, Leadership, Success. Recognitions were awarded under the following categories:
Let's Get Popping with Backyard Growers
Backyard Growers visited 6th grade science classes this week to discuss food preservation and processing techniques as students air-popped corn grown in the school garden. Students learned how applications of gas expansion and heat transfer occur to make popcorn pop, as well as reflecting on the challenges of food processing and planning for spring planting. To wrap up the popcorn unit, students reflected on their work of understanding food systems by comparing and contrasting community-based and commercially-based food production.
Anything But A Backpack Day
O'Maley's Student SAILS Council members have designated certain days for different spirit theme over the course of the year. On Friday. December 17th the them was "Anything But A Backpack." Students' creativity and ingenuity were challenged as they figured out alternatives to carrying their school belongings in a backpack.

COVID-19 Updates & Weekly Testing Sign-Up
COVID-19 at O'Maley: As of today, December 23rd, we have had 8 new cases reported this week and there are currently 13 active cases. All close contacts have been contacted. Since August 31, 2021 we have had 48 cases among our staff and student community. See the new GPS COVID Dashboard for updated data each week: https://backtogether.gloucesterschools.com/updates/dashboard-covid-cases.
As I shared earlier in the week, we had zero positive cases from our weekly group testing. If you are interested in signing up your child, please use the link below. At this time still just a third of our school community is enrolled and tested each week.
To Sign Up for Weekly Testing: Link here: https://www.cic-health.com/consent/ma?district=Gloucester.I encourage families to sign their children up to be tested. Individuals signed up to participate last year DO need to re-register. Parents/Guardians MUST complete the form to give permission in order for a student to be tested.
We are continuing to be vigilant here at school, despite that we are all fatigued with the pandemic and its restrictions. At home, please be mindful of the following helpful guidance to prevent the increasing spread:
- Be mindful of large gatherings with people you are not usually around.
- Wear masks at all indoor gatherings.
- Keep students at home if they are ill. Please follow the expectations outlined on the O'Maley handbook and contact the nurses' office if your child is sick. They can advise on symptoms and discuss testing if needed. '
- Get vaccinated for both COVID and the flu.
Please remember to conduct a daily symptom check with your children. Link here for the daily symptom check information. Please be sure to call the nurses' office at 978-281-9847 if your child is experiencing any of the symptoms as described. Our nurses, Kim Cameron and Alycia Gossom can answer questions and will guide you as to what you need to do related to testing and/or documentation from your child's doctor. Students must not come to school with symptoms.
As we head toward the holiday season, please be aware of the COVID-19 Travel Guidelines. Link here for information on what is needed to return to school following travel.
Masks & Distancing: Per the Massachusetts DESE and the Gloucester School Committee, all students and staff will be masked in GPS buildings except at lunch or mask break when they are socially distanced at 3 feet or more. Per DESE, masks are required in public schools until at least January 15, 2022. Masks are not required outdoors. For details on our health and safety protocols district wide, please visit the GPS COVID Guidance and Updates website at https://backtogether.gloucesterschools.com/.
Students must bring their own masks to school each day. While we all wish we did not have to wear them, masks continue to be required indoors at school. Thank you!
