Happy December!
Greetings Newport Families!
I cannot believe December is here! We have three more weeks of school left. Our last day of the school year is December 20th. We still have a lot of work left to do in these three weeks so please make sure to get your child to school on time. Just a reminder that our school hours are from 8:30am - 3:10pm. Remember we will be off for break starting the 23rd of December - January 3rd. School Resumes on Monday, January 6th.
However your family celebrates during this holiday season, take some time to make some memories. I wish you a restful winter break!

Staff Spotlight
I normally highlight a grade level or a team of staff each month. I want to take this time to thank my entire staff for everything that they do each and every single day to help our students at Newport Elementary School. Although not every person is pictured, this is important to note. I have been at Newport for 19 years and have seen many changes. I can tell you that this group that helps our kids every day are having daily conversations during their Professional Learning Community times planning for student learning. This group is constantly brainstorming on how to make learning and events better than ever before. Our focus is the students and our families that walk through the doors each and every day. Our collective goal to to prepare them for Newport and Beyond! So during this holiday season, I want to take this moment to thank every single staff member who enters our doors. Thank you for all that you do for our students!!!
Support in December - Local Food Banks Open in December
Your students are benchmarked three times a year using the i - Ready computer based program. Students will start their Winter Benchmarking assessment the week of December 9th. This information will show us how your child is progressing towards their individual growth goal and stretch goal. Please make every effort to have your child here on time and present.
Students are tested in reading and math using i - Ready. i - Ready provides us with information on how our students are progressing towards grade level standards. We gather this data and we as teaching teams review where each child is at currently and if they are in need of additional support to get on track towards grade level mastery. Each child is given a personalized learning path.
This learning path has assignments in reading and math that will help them get closer to achieving grade level proficiency. Beach Park School District #3 has a district initiative that has students working for 45 minutes a week on reading and math. Did you know teachers can assign students individual lessons on i - Ready? Our teachers are also able to assign students with lessons that are directly linked to a current unit of study and gather more information on a particular standard. This provides the student with even more practice towards mastery.
Leading up to our winter benchmarking we want students to not only complete their 45 minutes of reading and math but also get at least an 80% pass rate on their lessons. Teachers will be holding data chat conference with each child to make sure they not only know where they started from their Fall test, but provide them with some encouragement to do their absolute best to show what they know!

If your child is out for a medical or dental appointment, please bring (or email) me a Doctor’s note so the absence can be excused.
Please remember to call when your child is absent. If I do not answer my phone, you can leave a voice message with your name, your students name and the reason for their absence. I check my voicemail frequently.
Fee statements should have been brought home. If you think you qualify for reduced or waived fees, feel free to contact me and I can help you with that process.

Support Our PTO
Thank you to all of our Newport Families who came out to support our Newport PTO during our Culver's Event last month. We are excited to hold an amazing Storm Science Assembly for our student in February. The flyer is shown below of what our students will experience.
If you are interested in helping the PTO, please don't hesitate to contact us at emailnewportpto@gmail.com or by attending our monthly meetings. Please know that you don't have to dedicate much of your time! All the parents and staff on the PTO know that your time is valuable, and we understand everyone has a busy schedule, but you don't have to volunteer for every event; even just a few minutes a month could help make a difference. Every little bit helps! If you would like to donate a couple items for a fundraiser; if you know you are good at decorating for events, if you have great fundraising ideas or even just ideas to help bring families and staff closer, we are open to any and all suggestions.
REMINDER: Our meeting this month will be held at 5:30PM at the Zion Library. A google link will be sent out prior for all of those who wish to join us virtually. We hope to see you there!
