As-Salamu Alaykum Summer Camp Families, As-Salamu Alaykum Summer Camp Families,

We hope this message finds you well and enjoying the blessings of the summer season. Eid Mubarak to you and your loved ones! May Allah accept our prayers, fasting, and good deeds during the blessed days of Dull Hijjah.

This week our camp has been abuzz with activities centered around the theme of mindfulness of Allah, aimed at cultivating peaceful hearts among our students. Immediately following Eid, two days at camp our young learners immersed themselves in joyful Eid celebrations featuring bouncy castles as a delightful treat! Moving forward, we delved into the importance of mindful worship, particularly focusing on Salah. Our students embarked on a journey to perfect their Salah, starting with the essentials such as performing wudhu correctly. They diligently learned the step-by-step process of Salah, understanding its significance as one of the pillars of Islam. It is crucial for us to instill this knowledge in the next generation, ensuring they understand the responsibility that comes with it.

ART ART

This week the children got in touch with their creative side by filling out and coloring in Hands of Gratefulness and Muslim Identities. Campers created artwork to showcase 3 parts of our identity: we are Allah’s Ambassador (Khalifa), we are the representative of Allah’s Messenger SAW (Naaib), and we are the Inheritors of the Quran (Warith).

The Middle School Girls also participate in Martial Arts with Sister Neelam twice a week!

This month the students learned the importance of knowing self defense techniques such as:

-Understanding that body language matters and knowing that you are equipped with the tools to be able to defend yourself brings out confidence that averts danger.

-Attackers are looking for victims, not fighters. The students were taught the importance of eye contact with a potential threat, instead of avoiding it, so they come across as confident and strong.

-They were taught how to break a grip when being grabbed with a single hand or two handed wrist grabs.

-They learned the technique of bridging and shrimping when on the ground and its importance in helping get the opponent off of you and creating the distance needed to exit the attack situation.

-The efficacy of redirecting the energy instead of fighting it dead on. Learning different techniques depending on the situation that is presented.

-They learned how to defend against an attack that involves being choked by the attacker.

-They learned tools that do not require immense physical strength, but are efficient in a self defense scenario.

Towards the end of class, they play a strategic game that keeps them physically active yet helps nurture positive friendships and team building. We end class with a quick reflection and dua. The focus is to reflect and be grateful for having the physical ability to be able to practice all the skills we are learning. Being thankful for the opportunities that are provided, and remembering everyone that is a part of making this learning a possibility.
