Mustang Matters May 2nd, 2025

Greetings MMS Families,

Happy May! This week was another indicator of how far along we are in the school year as we began our CAPE testing this week with Science on Monday and whole school ELA and Math Tuesday-Thursday. Testing will usurp the bulk of our attention the next two weeks, after which we will shift quickly back into finishing the year strong and preparing for another great year next year!

This coming week is Teacher’s Appreciation Week! For all the growth we have made as a school in the past few years, it is the hard work, collaboration, and commitment to our students by our staff that makes all the difference in the experience, growth and success of our Mustangs. I am truly thankful for our team at MacFarland – with all the hard work needed to make sure our school is strong and getting stronger, I feel every day that I work and lead alongside some of the most dedicated, passionate educators I have ever known. Thank you Mustang Educators! Thank you as well to our PTO who is coordinating Wednesday’s Treat Trolley to bring some sweets and refreshments to the staff as they have a break from testing on that day. Please connect with the PTO if you’d like to support/participate!

We also have our second week of full school CAPE testing as we working through Thursday to conclude the bulk of testing for the majority of students, with makeup testing for smaller groups the week after. We are looking forward to a strong finish with testing and are thankful to our Mustangs who have worked hard and focused to do well on CAPE!

Toy guns/toy weapons/squirt guns/water guns – as the school year winds down our students will often think we are closer to summer break than we are and bring in items that are prohibited that end up requiring a lot of staff energy and result in significant discipline. Any kind of toy weapon, including squirt guns and the like, must be treated as possible intentional threats and require reporting to DCPS, conducting incident reports and often contacting MPD. Please ensure you reiterate to your Mustangs that these items CANNOT be brought to school at any time including the last day(s) of school or they will result in suspension and required parent meetings.

Have a great weekend,

Cooke

Every Day Counts! - Attendance Information

At DC Public Schools, we want every student to feel loved, challenged, and prepared to positively influence society and thrive in life. To reach this ambitious goal, every student needs to be in school every day. However, too many of the young people in our city are not coming to school every day.

The Office of the State Superintendent’s (OSSE) finds that one in four kids in DC are chronically absent from school – which means missing 10 percent or more of the school year. At some DCPS high schools, three out of four students are chronically absent.

DCPS believes that every day counts.

Students, families, and the community must be empowered to track our progress in helping every young person get to school. By being transparent about our challenges, our city can work together to reduce the barriers that too many students and families face.

Definitions

  • Truancy: Measures the percent of students aged 5-17 who are considered truant. To be “truant” means that a student has 10 or more unexcused absences from school – with or without – parental knowledge, consent, or otherwise securing prior approval from the start of the school year.
  • In-school Attendance: Measures the average percent of students who are attending school.
  • Chronic Absence Rate: Measures the percent of students who miss 10 percent or more days in a school year from the start of the school year.
  • Attendance Entry Rate: Measures the percent of classes for which a school has entered attendance.
  • 60/40 rule: Students are considered legally absent for the day if they miss more than 40% of their classes.

Regular school attendance is critical for academic success. Our goal is to ensure that every student attends school regularly and on time. Daily presence in school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success, starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families can continue to play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life.

We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. But, we also know that when students miss too much school—excused or unexcused—they can fall behind academically. Your child is less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically absent—which means missing 18 or more days in a school year. Research shows that:

Children that are chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade. By 6th grade, chronic absence is a warning sign for students at risk of dropping out of school. By 9th grade, good attendance can predict graduation rates even better than 8th grade test scores.

Questions/Concerns:

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Ms. Claribel Salgado via email at claribel.salgado@k12.dc.gov or by phone at (202) 671-6033.

Attendance Excuse Notes:

If your student is absent for a legally approved reason please complete the Attendance Excuse Form at the link below.

https://forms.office.com/r/CzHTTvJCM9

Alternatively, if you are unable to submit the form you can email Ms. Claribel Salgado (claribel.salgado@k12.dc.gov) or direct your student to turn in their excuse note or official documentation to the main office.

Rematriation Mural - Artist's Message

Earlier this year, a local artist, Leonina Arismendi, along with her sons, created a mural on the second floor by the arts room that MacFarland's art club students have been filling in with their own creativity under Ms. Lewand's guidance since (see the photos below). Leonina also worked with the arts club to share her expertise on mural arts.

Dear Parents and Staff of McFarland Middle School,

I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for welcoming me into your school community and allowing us the space to create Rematriation, one of six murals across the DMV in this series. This mural is deeply personal—it represents freedom, hope, and the power of creativity. It is also my final public arts project in the U.S. before my children, Lalo and Logan, and I return home to Uruguay.

Through this mural, McFarland students in the arts and mural clubs have played an essential role in co-creating something truly meaningful. The birds they painted alongside me and my kids symbolize migration, resilience, and the connections that transcend borders. Rematriation is more than a mural—it is a bridge between school districts, states, and even countries, reminding us of the joy that comes from making art together.

I have dedicated myself to this project without commission because I believe in the importance of public art and the collective stories it tells. Even sharing it with friends and community members helps tremendously!

Thank you for being part of this journey and for supporting not only this mural but also the vision behind it. I am honored to have created Rematriation with your students, and I hope this piece continues to inspire for years to come!

Expansion of Collaborative for Attendance Resources in Education and Health (CARE-H) to all schools

This school year, DCPS is partnering with Children’s National Hospital to support our students’ health and attendance through the Collaborative for Attendance Resources in Education and Health (CARE-H); CARE-H is now available in all DCPS schools. Through this program, parents or guardians can give permission to DCPS to securely share attendance information with their child’s doctor(s), nurse(s) and medical office staff. This information will help these healthcare professionals to provide special outreach and medical attention to children that might be missing school and their families. Information about this initiative can be found here.
