Reminders Reminders

Here’s what the Oshkosh Area School District (OASD) says about students bringing birthday treats to school:

  • Edible treats (food) are not allowed to be brought in for birthdays under district policy. This applies in elementary schools and is part of the district’s effort to support healthy habits and address food-safety/allergy concerns.

  • Instead of food treats, students may bring a small, tangible non-food item to share, such as pencils, stickers, or small toys (e.g., glow sticks, erasers). These non-food items are permitted as birthday “treats” for classmates.

  • Some schools specifically note that teachers will still celebrate birthdays in class (e.g., singing, games, recognition) but no food treats are allowed.

  • Students at Read receive the gift of a birthday book of their choice from a selection in the office.

Why This Policy? This approach helps support healthy eating habits, minimize food-allergy and safety issues, ensure all students can participate equally, regardless of dietary needs.
