WHAT IS...THE BOSTON MARATHON?
By Olivia, Cece, Maddy & Mrs. Murray
The Boston Marathon takes place every April on Patriot's Day. it is a 26.2 mile course that starts in Hopkinton Massachusetts and ends on Boylston Street in Boston. The very first Boston Marathon took place on April 19, 1897. The first woman ran the Boston Marathon in 1967 and now 12,210 women ran in 2025. There were a total of just over 28,000 people that ran the 2025 Marathon. The winning time for men was John Korir and for women it was Sharon Lokedi. The winning wheel chair racer finished in 1 hour and 26 minutes and it was Marcel Hug for men and Suzanna Scaroni who finished in 1 hour and 35 minutes.
These runners are incredible. John Korir finished in 2 hours and 4 minutes (that's equal to almost 13 miles/hour) and Sharon Lokedi broke the course record with a time of 2 hours and 17 minutes. The average finish time for a runner was 3 hours and 53 minutes (which is a 9 minute mile). Every year there are inspirational stories from the race. In 2013 there was a bombing at the Marathon near the finish line that killed three people and injured countless more. One inspirational story from that year is of Rescue the dog and Jessica. They have visited Vinal several times. Jessica Kensky and Patrick Downes both lost limbs in the bombing and found comfort and support in their rescue dog who joined there family six months after they sustained their injuries. They wrote a book titled "Rescue and Jessica" about the healing power of rescue dogs.

AI Generated Poem about Rescue and Jessica
In the world of dogs and their humans true,
A special pair, a loyal view.
Rescue, a dog, with heart so brave,
And Jessica, a soul to save.
With gentle paws and wagging tail,
Rescue helps Jessica, never to fail.
Through storms of life, they stand as one,
A bond of friendship, brightly spun.
Rescue guides her, strong and near,
Dispelling shadows, banishing fear.
Jessica trusts in Rescue's grace,
Finding strength in this sacred space.
So raise a glass to this loyal pair,
A story of love, beyond compare.
Rescue and Jessica, a happy tale,
A friendship strong, that will not fail.
