MEDFORD MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS
Middle School Flag Football
The 2026 Medford Mustangs flag team were adaptable, tough, and a family. Whether it was early in a game with multiple newly installed defensive plays or they got down early and had to play a little harder, they did it all as a family. We finished 5-5 on the year, with multiple games starting down and coming back, and a couple getting up early and never looking back. Their losses were battles, and more often than not, the wins were lopsided.
The All Star this year embodies those traits. Very often Bennett Morrow's position on the field was to guard the best player on the opposing team. He was also asked him to be a leader for others no matter what his personal statistics were that game.
This is the type of team that makes coaching fun. They celebrated each other's successes, and picked each other up during the setbacks. The student athletes on this team grew a lot throughout the season, and I'm glad I got the privilege to be a part of it.
Middle School Outdoor Track
On Friday June 5th, 2026 more than thirty five student athletes competed at the 14th MA Middle School State Championship Track and Field Meet. On the girls team, Vivian Sundell of the Andrews finished 4th overall in the discus with a best throw of 70 ft. Finishing 9th overall, just one place away from medaling, was the McGlynn 4x400 team of Evelyn Willwerth, Ava Dutkiewicz, Avni Hutchinson, and Phaedra Flynn.
Scoring for the boys team was Nikolas Tarasov who finished 6th in the 400 with a personal best time of 58.18. His McGlynn counterpart James Elliott also placed 8th in the 400 with a personal best time of 59.7. Both these boys were part of the 6th place 4x400 team that finished in 4:24 seconds, along with Adam Nazih and Kahlan Doshi-Rice. Other notable performances came from Ben Rudolph who finished 10th in the 100 meter hurdles (18.57); Owen Labissoniere who finished 9th in the 200 (26.02); and javelin thrower Joshua Pereira, who also finished 9th.
For many of these student athletes it was their first experience at a championship meet: a well deserved ending to a long and rewarding season. Thank you to assistant coaches Sara Vivian and Hannah Zuklie who did a spectacular job, especially for being new to the sport of track and field. Additional thanks goes to coach Murphy, Whalen, and Enos, who volunteered their time to support the team. Thank you to Tom Schofield who took professional photos at many of the meets. And of course to the student athletes for always striving towards the best version of themselves!
MEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
Baseball
From the first day of preseason to the final out, this group competed with energy and determination. Throughout the season, our players continued to grow both on and off the field, developing their skills, strengthening team chemistry, and embracing the responsibility of representing our program.
The Mustangs finished the season with a 10-11 overall record and an 8-6 league record, earning them 2nd consecutive tournament bid and the Greater Boston League Championship. Throughout the season, our players competed with determination and represented Medford High School in a first-class manner.
This year, we were proud to have nine seniors who played a vital role in shaping the identity of this team. Their leadership, commitment, and work ethic set the tone for the entire program. Whether it was leading by example at practice, stepping up in big moments, or supporting their teammates, this senior group leaves behind a strong foundation for the future. We thank our seniors for everything they have given to Medford Baseball and wish them continued success in their next chapter. They will always be part of the Mustang family.
Congratulations to our three Greater Boston League (GBL) All-Star honors this season: Travers Moodie, Jonathan Wright, and Jayden Burns. This recognition is a testament to their hard work, consistency, and impact on the field throughout the season. we are incredibly proud of their achievements.
Crew
Thanks to a Medford Community Fund Grant, the MHS Crew Program was able to expand our dock as we grew to a team of 38 student-athletes. The team can now launch multiple boats at the same time and get more time on the water. The improved dock is open to the entire community when not in use by the rowing team.
The Medford Mayor’s Cup returned thanks to the hard work of Coach Chris Serene. This is the largest local regatta and has since become a standard for safe and well run regattas in New England. Teams from as far away as Maine and Connecticut traveled to Medford for the competition.
We were once again able to send 2 boats to compete in USRowing’s Northeast Youth Championships, our athletes brought home 2 Gold, 4 Silver, and 2 bronze at the Medford Mayors Cup and 2 gold, 4 silver, and a bronze at the MPSRA State Championship!
Congratulations to Seniors James Cluggish, Charlie Orcutt, and Matthew Stricker for being recognized by MHS Athletics for their outstanding achievements this past season.

This season, Medford Girls Lacrosse were named undefeated GBL champions again. Senior Captain Becky Casey ended her career with 263 goals. She is currently the lead scorer in the history of Medford Girls lacrosse. Sophomore Erin Alves got her 100th career goal. The season started off on a high note with beating Newton South by one goal with no time left. We made it to the first round of tournament but sadly lost to Malden Catholic. We had another great season filled with amazing memories! Our All Stars are Becky Casey and Siena Fauci with Erin Alves being named GBL MVP.
Outdoor Track
The girls track team had a strong 2026 season led by senior captains Kaye Godcher, Ella Melchionno, Magedelawit Takele, Lina Gomez, and Anycia Pierre. In addition to our seniors this was a breakout season for junior Norah Berson, who placed 2nd in the 100m and 5th in the 200m at the Division 1 State Championship. Norah also broke the school record in the 200m, a mark that had stood for more than 20 years and was previously held by Olympian Arantxa King.
The future is bright as sophomore Isabelle De Sousa-Vieira and freshman Parker Priesner both qualified for the Division 1 State Championship in the 2-mile and 400m, respectively. The 4x800 relay team of Naomi Nascimento, Olivia O’Brien, Isabelle De Sousa-Vieira, and Sophia Yucel also qualified for the divisional meet.
The sprint relay team of Anycia Pierre, Sydney Coffill, Lina Gomez, and Norah Berson continued its dominance from the indoor season, winning the State Relay Championship in the 4x200 while breaking its own school record. The girls followed that performance with a 2nd place finish at the Division 1 State Championship and a 4th place finish at the Meet of Champions, lowering the school record by almost 3 seconds on the season and becoming the first girls 4x100 to break 50 seconds in school history.
The boys track team had a strong 2026 season led by lone senior Adam Lewis. Adam put together the best distance season in school history, shattering school records in both the 800m and mile. His postseason was highlighted by a 7th place finish at the Meet of Champions in the mile, where he ran a school-record 4:18.16 to break a more than 40-year-old record.
The team also benefited from strong leadership from juniors Jonah Nicholas, Aaron Greenberg, and Tim Hunt. Along with Lewis, the trio formed the second-fastest 4x800 relay team in school history. Greenberg enjoyed a breakout season of his own, winning the GBL title in the 800m and finishing second in the mile behind Lewis.
The future is bright as well, with underclassmen making key contributions throughout the season. Freshman Keith Wilson highlighted the next generation by breaking the 12-second barrier in the 100m and placing 5th in the freshman 100m at the State Coaches Meet.
Softball
GREATER BOSTON LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
The 2026 Medford girls’ softball season started with high expectations. As a first-year coach I could see right away that this team had talent. I also noticed they have a bond and enjoyed being around each other. Even though the Spring weather didn’t cooperate most of the time and there was lots of inside gym and batting cage time this unit made it enjoyable to be around.
The season started out by winning the first four games. Everything appeared to be clicking. Pitching, hitting and good solid defense were all on display. Unfortunately, the team was dealt a dose of reality with a loss vs Marblehead, but they turned it around and the next eight games were all victories. Unfortunately, once again there was a setback with a tough 8-7 loss loss to Minuteman Regional Tech. Due to the tough spring weather the girls were forced to play five games in five days to finish out the season. Final regular season record stood at 15-5 before entering into the State Tournament against a tough Lincoln-Sudbury team.
I want to make sure my players know that I appreciate all their efforts and commitment to me and their school. I know it’s not easy and I know there are lots of other things that could take up your time. But they chose softball. Thank you ALL. Seniors you will be missed. Thank you for your leadership and your commitment. I know you will do great things. Hopefully your softball careers will lead to you becoming great leaders in the future!
All Stars: Syd Conti , Lily Kiley, Kat Riccioli & Isabel Taddia
Boy's Tennis
Medford boys tennis had a great year, finishing in second in the GBL and had an overall 10-4 record. We qualified for the state tournament, and in the first round, we beat Chelmsford, 3 to 2, in a very exciting match.
Congratulations to our six players who earned all-league status: Micah Cheriakaleth (Singles, All League), Zach Travers (Singles, All League) , Krish Patel (Doubles, All League), Sarvesh Maharjan (Doubles, All League), Nolan O'Keefe (Doubles, All League), Nate Russell (Doubles, All League).
Girl's Tennis
Ava Magner, playing second and third singles this year, was voted a league all-star and winning a critical, match deciding second singles vs Malden late in the season. Cece Colombo, who played up from second to first singles several times, improved her mental game steadily throughout the season to a pinnacle of winning a marathon playoff match in a third set tiebreaker against a very tough Somerville opponent who had beaten her twice during the season.
She was certainly a team all-star and probably should have been a league all-star as well. Winning all their matches except in the losses to Somerville were Haily LaGrassa and Kristin Morris at first doubles and Marina Gregorio and Natasha Daranuwat at second doubles. And Xeni Ververis won the majority of her first singles matches.
All Stars: Ava Magner
Unified Track
Boy's Volleyball
The Medford Mustangs Boys Varsity Volleyball team faced a season full of challenges and change, with new players stepping into key roles throughout the lineup. The team also overcame the difficult loss of captain Andrew Moreira, who suffered a midseason injury and missed some time. After graduating much of last year's experienced roster, only six players remained from the squad that earned a state tournament playoff victory the previous season.
Despite the adversity, the Mustangs showed resilience, growth, and determination all year long. One of the season's highlights came on Senior Night, when Medford delivered an unforgettable performance against a talented Lynn Classical team, earning an exciting three-set victory in front of family, friends, and supporters. The win was a fitting celebration of senior Moreira's leadership and the team's commitment to competing together through every challenge.
All stars: Will Travers
