Tuesdays with Mr. Knoll
A message from Superintendent Knoll
Dear Cardinal Family,
This will be my final “Tuesdays with Mr. Knoll” to share the facts of the upcoming November 3 operating levy. I want to review our district's financial standing, why this issue is before our community, and what it means for the future of Canfield Local Schools.
For more than a decade (since 2013), the district has functioned without new operating revenue while the cost of educating our students has continued to increase. Salaries and benefits, transportation, utilities, technology, and student services all place increasing demands on our budget. In addition, the state of Ohio has cut its funding such that Canfield receives fewer dollars than we did in 2016. For FY2027, our projected revenue is approximately $31.5 million, while expenditures exceed $33 million. This gap is not sustainable.
Our district has worked to manage expenses, identify efficiencies, and make responsible financial decisions. As we have shared, the district has saved around $4 million dollars over the past 6 years due to staff reductions through attrition.
The proposed 5.9-mill operating levy is designed to generate approximately $5.7 million annually. The estimated cost is $207 per year (~ $17.00 per month) for a property valued at $100,000 by the County Auditor. These additional operating funds would help the district maintain people, protect student programs, and support extracurricular opportunities. This operating levy will not be used to construct new facilities.
Without additional operating revenue this school year, we will need to consider increasingly difficult decisions. These could include reductions in staffing, programs, extracurricular activities, and services, as well as changes to transportation and course offerings. We will continue to examine efficiencies, but reductions alone cannot indefinitely address the gap between revenue and expenses without affecting students and the services we provide.
I recognize that many families and taxpayers are experiencing their own financial challenges. Those concerns deserve to be heard and respected. As Superintendent, I am responsible for being transparent about the district's financial position, explaining the choices before us, and ensuring our community understands the potential implications of those choices.
As Election Day approaches, I ask that you remain informed about the facts surrounding the operating levy. Operating levy information can be found on our district website:
https://www.canfieldschools.net/november-2026-operating-levy
As always, there is so much to celebrate across our district. Keep scrolling to see the great things happening in our buildings and throughout our Cardinal community.

EDUCATOR OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to CVMS science/social studies teacher Christine Davis, our Board of Education Educator of the Month, sponsored by Dairy Queen!
Her colleague, Mrs. Sipe, nominated Miss Davis, saying she brings energy and creativity to her students through hands-on projects, field trips, and thoughtful lessons.
They are pictured with BOE member Mr. Atway.
Thank you, Miss Davis, for your dedication to our students and for making a difference in the Canfield Local Schools community. We appreciate all you do!
STUDENTS SERVING OUR COMMUNITY
Several Canfield High School Key Club members, along with Mr. Holben, Mr. Maiorana, and OWE/OWA students, volunteered at Direction Home of Eastern Ohio’s annual Pack the Valley event at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
Last year, volunteers packed more than 133,000 meals for community members in need. This year, the goal was to surpass 170,000 meals — and they did!
As part of the morning crew, our Cardinals helped pack more than 90,000 meals, bringing the event total to an incredible 176,000 meals!
We’re proud of our students and staff for giving their time, lending a helping hand, and showing what it means to serve our community.
The CHS Teen Medical Society presented a check for $8,500 to Salem Regional Medical Center, raised through a Pink Out Pickleball Tournament! 🎀🎾
Congratulations to these students!
KINDNESS MATTERS
It's Kindness Month, and we are practicing ways to be kind at CVMS with Mrs. Lamping, in partnership with the Ohio School Safety Center.
NEXT STRATEGIC PLAN IN THE WORKS
The Steering Committee for Canfield Local Schools’ next five-year Strategic Plan met for the first time last week.
This group will help lead a community-wide process to shape the district’s vision, mission, and priorities for the next five years. The process began with our community survey in July and August and will continue through the plan’s anticipated approval and adoption in May 2027.
Your voice matters! Community participation and input will be essential as we work together to shape the future of Canfield Local Schools.
Stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to share your ideas and get involved!

CANFIELD FAMILY TAKES THE STAGE FOR MARCH OF DIMES
Last week, Melanie and Bob Beadle, and their children Gia, Leo, Lea and Geo, represented Canfield with pride at the March of Dimes Ambassador Family of the Year event. The family shared their personal NICU journey with an audience of several hundred supporters, helping shine a light on the challenges faced by families of premature babies.
Melanie Beadle shared how meaningful it has been for her children to see how their story can make a difference in the lives of others. Their willingness to share their experiences is a powerful reminder of the impact that personal stories can have in raising awareness and inspiring support.
Next year, March of Dimes will celebrate 90 years of advancing the health of moms and babies, having helped millions of premature babies and their families along the way. We are proud of the Beadle family for sharing their story and helping make a difference for others!

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK
Keeping Our Cardinals Safe
Last week, Canfield Local Schools recognized School Bus Safety Week and reminded motorists to follow the laws designed to protect students as they travel to and from school. On Tuesday, we welcomed members of our local law enforcement who joined our buses on the road, adding a visible presence and helping raise awareness about school bus safety.
I had the pleasure of riding an elementary route with Joamie Mrozek and can personally attest that she is an exceptional driver! Thank you to Joamie and all our bus drivers, aides, mechanics, and Transportation Director Ms. Cervello, who work hard every day to make sure our students get to and from school safely. Thank you for all you do to Carry the Cardinals!

IN THE CLASSROOM
CHS student in Ohio House of Representatives High School Student Art Exhibition
Congratulations to Canfield Junior, Zoe Dillinger! Her charcoal drawing titled “Self Portrait” will represent the 59th district in the Ohio House of Representatives High School Student Art Exhibition! Her teacher, Mr. Hoopes, said that the biennial exhibition showcases artwork from talented high school art students across all 99 Ohio House districts.
The program was established in 2016 under the 131st General Assembly to recognize young local artists and their educators. The program displays selected pieces publicly in the bustling hallway connecting the Vern Riffe Center for the Government and the Arts and the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.
High school art teachers from across the state submit their students' visual artwork. The Ohio Arts Council manages the selection process in partnership with the Ohio Art Education Association. One student awardee represents each of the 99 House districts.
The Ohio House of Representatives High School Student Art Exhibition is officially on display and will hang until 2028.
CHS CHEM CLUB CELEBRATES MOLE DAY
Our Chem Club, 60 students strong, celebrated Mole Day on October 23rd. What is Mole Day? It commemorates Avogadro's Number (6.02 x 10²³), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. Mole Day was created as a way to foster interest in chemistry. Schools throughout the United States and around the world celebrate Mole Day with various activities related to chemistry and/or moles.
CARDINAL KERNELS HAS BIG DAY!
A new student business launched today during lunch! Mrs. Anzevino’s class created Cardinal Kernels, and for just $1 a bag, students could grab freshly popped popcorn. All the labels and flyers were created by the class. The delicious smell filled the school halls all morning! Now THAT’S a smart business plan! They sold out of their product at all three lunches! Way to go, Cardinals!
FARM TO TABLE FOOD TRUCK DAY
FALL ADVENTURE AT CVMS
Ms. Davis’ sixth-grade science students wrapped up their Rocks and Minerals Unit with some delicious hands-on learning! Students created edible soil cups using cookies, cereal, pudding, pretzels, and gummy worms to represent soil layers. That’s a sweet way to dig into science! 😋
The class also took their learning outdoors with a trip to Mill Creek Park with Mrs. Fitzgerald’s class. With beautiful fall weather, it was the perfect day to explore and enjoy nature! 🍁
What a great way to wrap up the unit! See more photos on our social media pages.

Mrs. Bloomster’s kindergarteners enjoyed creative outdoor time at the CHC outdoor classroom exploration table.
