Message from Nicole Pease
Hello DCS families, I hope you are well! This week has been about NHSAS testing and Children and the Arts with a few other additions too! Many of the Grade 3-5 students have completed their reading and math SAS testing. Next week, we will focus upon completing the writing portion. I am very proud of the students as they are showing lots of grit as they work through the testing.
Children and the Arts is tomorrow and I am hoping the rain holds off so that we can participate in the parade and showcase our Water Horse giant puppet as well as students' individual sculptures. We will be lining up at PES around 11:45am so that we can be ready when the parade begins at 12:00pm. Please have your children join us and you can either walk with us or watch the parade and meet us in Putnam Park at the end. Please stop by Roy's Market and see the DCS art installed there!
The Keene Rotary visited with their yearly donation of sneakers for 2nd graders. The purpose of this delivery is to encourage movement and healthy activities. It is an amazing treat and the 1st and 2nd graders enjoyed their time with the rotary.
This morning brought the biannual Walk to School. It is such fun to see how excited students are as they arrive at DGS, line up, cross 101 (thanks to Police Chief Suokko), and arrive at school. It was nice to have so many parents join us!
PTO held a meeting after the Walk to School, and it would be wonderful to get some additional parents to join this group. The dedication they have to supporting students and the staff at DCS makes a difference to us all! If you are interested, please reach out. Take care and hope to see you tomorrow, Nicole

4th and 5th graders have been busy bees as we have returned from April Vacation!
We are finishing up our study of geometry. During the past few lessons, we have created art and solved secret messages using principles we were studying such as symmetry and coordinate grids. It has been a lot of fun to watch them make connections in artistic ways.
In Social Studies, our focus is creating time lines. The 4th graders are looking at key events in the history of New Hampshire, while the 5th graders are focused on the major events of the civil war
Miss Jamie returned for one of our last turtle talks before our turtles are returned to the wild. She led the student in an art based research project making a painted turtle trading card. These turtles will be returned to the wild on May 30th.
DCS's Memorial Day Assembly will be led by our 5th graders. Please feel free to join us if you are able. This will be held on Thursday, May 22 at 9 AM in the MPR.

The super terrific third graders worked very hard on their SAS reading and math tests this week. On Monday, they will write their writing pieces.
The class began our unit on the Worry Woos. This is an excellent SEL program that focuses on childhood anxieties. Each week, the children are introduced to a new monster that teaches about a particular anxiety. We meet the stuffed monster, read the book twice, discuss, and complete an activity to reinforce ways to support someone if confronted with that worry. They have met Wince, the Worry Monster, and his pal, the Worry Bug, along with Squeek the monster of change.
We are continuing to read Charlotte’s Web. The children focused on inference and predictions. We started back up our Mystery Writing, spending five days working hard on learning to write a third-grade narrative with all the story elements, including a lead-in to capture the reader.
For Science, we started incubating chicken eggs to learn organically about the chicken's life cycle. The children learned the process through books and discussion, guessed how many eggs they thought would hatch, and started the exciting wait to track our chicks. Fingers crossed!
Craft time! The children created gorgeous Mother’s Day tiles for gifts and an extra for the PTO Auction in June. We also papier-mached and painted our “book” puppet for CATA. We hope everyone joins us on Saturday at noon to walk in the parade!
4th/5th English Language Arts
Due to the SAS testing, our time together has been short. We have focused on our book study of Holes, reviewing the characters and wondering how the main character’s past storyline ties into the current storyline. This week, they have focused on narrative writing, adding all the different story elements into their stories. There was an emphasis on peer suggestions, transition words, and creating dialogue for the characters. Next week, they will type their final copies and share them with their classmates. Please remember to have your child read from a chapter book every evening as homework!

We had a special visitor this week! Miss Jaime from the Harris Center came to teach us all about pollination. We had so much fun looking closely at real flowers and taking them apart to see the parts that help flowers make seeds.
Another exciting moment this week was a visit from Keene Rotary. They brought brand-new sneakers for all the second graders. Their goal is to help kids stay active and healthy. They also shared a fun challenge: all students are invited to stay active this summer and try to complete 25 miles of movement! In the fall, they can finish the last 1.2 miles at the DeMar Marathon to make a full marathon—how cool!
We are so thankful for all the support from our community!
Right now, our class is working hard on a Readers Theater about The Star-Spangled Banner for our Memorial Day Assembly. We would love to see you there! Please join us on Thursday, May 22nd at 9:00 a.m. to learn more about Memorial Day and see our performance.

This week, our kindergarteners have been learning all about teen numbers — understanding them as ten and some more! We've also been wrapping up our unit on digraphs, and it's been exciting to see how well the students are reading.
Today, each child will bring home their sunflower plant to continue caring for and watching it grow at home. In addition, the sculptures we made for the Children in the Arts Parade are also heading home today, ready to be carried with pride in tomorrow’s festivities. We’re all so excited for the parade and the fun activities planned — we hope to see you there!
DCS Art, May 2025
Our DCS artists are parade ready! Each student designed a sculpture to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Children and the Arts. Having completed structure, volume, and form work, their focus this week was surface, color, and texture.
Students are bringing their sculptures home on Friday.
Students and family members are encouraged to carry their artwork in the Children and the Arts parade in Peterborough at noon on May 17th. Please visit the event page for information and updates: https://www.childrenandthearts.org/parade-faq
Thank you for supporting creativity!

Note from Robin Gregg, School Counselor
Spring is a time of growth, new beginnings and change! Here at school, our students continue to grow, physically, intellectually, and emotionally. Young children often are focused on the present ("Are we having indoor or outdoor recess today?" "My tooth is so wiggly!" "This story is so funny!") but they are also aware of pending changes--summer vacation, a new grade level next year. The prospect of change can provoke a range of feelings in children: uncertainty and worry; feelings of loss; excitement and anticipation; curiosity and happiness. Here at DCS we always work to maintain our routines as much as we can while also integrating special events and activities into the school calendar. In addition, as always, we are here to support the children!
Recent classroom counseling lessons have focused on the world of work. Students have explored their interests and talents and have discussed potential careers that seem to fit their personalities and preferences. They have learned about an array of features in different jobs and have discussed ways the skills and expectations entailed in their job as a student are similar to the skills and expectations that characterize jobs they might pursue in the future.
Indicator 8 Survey
Dear parents,
As part of our commitment to providing the best possible support and resources for students receiving special education services, we invite you to participate in the annual Parent Involvement survey conducted by the New Hampshire Department of Education (NHED).
This brief survey is to gauge the level of parent involvement in our schools and how it contributes to improving services and outcomes for children with special education. The survey window is April 11, 2025 until May 23rd, 2025. All responses are anonymous.
To access the survey, visit this NHDOE website.
Please complete a separate survey for each child receiving special education services in your family. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child's education.

Recently, there have been numerous student requests for cough drops. As cough drops are considered medication, I am asking for your help in following the ConVal policy on medication administration at the elementary level. To do this, any medication, including cough drops, must be delivered to the school by a parent/guardian or their designated responsible adult in the original container. A written permission form is also required which is available at DCS.
Please reach out to me at pmurphy@conval.edu if you have any questions.
