From the Principal

Welcome Back! As always, it's hard to believe summer is nearing its end and we are preparing for another school year. Our building has been refreshed with some new paint, LED lights, and a few new sets of classroom furniture. Staff returns with regular hours on August 26th and we are excited to welcome students on our first day of school---Tuesday, September 3rd!

Our goal continues to be providing effective instruction in every class, every day. Our teachers will be working even more closely with grade level colleagues to plan instruction and monitor student progress. Across all contents, students can expect to read and write with increased frequency and purpose.

Partnership with our students and their families is critical to student success. Please use your student's teacher (s) as the first point of contact if you have concerns, but know that the counselors and administrators are here to assist and support at all times.

Within this newsletter, you will find important information regarding the first few weeks of school. A monthly newsletter will be distributed on the 15th of each month. Please take the time to review each newsletter so that you are aware of what is happening in our building! In addition to this newsletter, we also use Facebook, Twitter, and Connect5 to share information.

I hope to see many of you at our Back to School Tail Gate on August 28th and look forward to another excellent year at Boonsboro Middle School!

Cell Phone/Personal Technology Policy

A county-wide policy regarding personal technology use was approved this summer. This policy aligns with the BMS policy, which states that students in our building from 8:35-3:45 are to have devices (cell phones, tablets, ear buds, etc.) out of sight and turned off, with the exception of lunch/recess. Students who do not comply with this policy will receive a referral and will have their cell phone confiscated until the end of the day.

Please review this policy with your child prior to the first day of school.

The official WCPS press-release is included for your reading pleasure:

"The Washington County Board of Education (WCBOE) approved revisions to Policy JICJ, “Use of Personally-Owned, Electronic Devices” at the July 16, 2019 Business Meeting. The policy outlines the appropriate times and circumstances under which students can use their personal technology devices such as cell phones, tablets, computers, etc. in school and during the school day.

The Board decided to re-examine Policy JICJ in light of Washington County Public Schools’ (WCPS) Digital Learning Plan, which provides iPads and Chromebooks to all students in 3rd through 12th grades for enriching classroom learning experiences. WCPS-owned devices provide all materials and resources necessary for instructional time, thereby eliminating the need for students to use their own technology.

Under the revised policy, personally-owned, electronic devices are to be kept out of sight and turned off during instructional time (class time). Use of a personally-owned, electronic device may be granted by a supervising adult during lunch time and in between classes. In addition, such devices may be used in an emergency situation as determined by a supervising adult.

Due to confidentiality, privacy, and legal considerations, a student may not use a personally-owned, electronic device to take photographs or record audio or video in school, during the school day, or on a school bus. Personally-owned, electronic devices may be used on school buses as long as the use does not disrupt bus operations and safety.

These changes reflect the Board’s desire to prevent the use of personally-owned, electronic devices from disrupting the school day or being a distraction during instructional time when learning should be the focus."

Schedules

Class schedules should be "live" in StudentVue/ParentVue today (Thursday) at 4PM. Students were very carefully scheduled according to their course selection sheets and academic performance. If you believe there is an error in your child's classes, please contact the Counseling Center. Note: We do not change schedules based on teacher preference.
