From Principal McCray

Good evening families,

As the weather gets cooler, please remind students to check the lost and found for any missing clothing items.

Picture retakes October 27:

If you want your student to retake their picture, please make sure the entire picture package is returned on the day of retakes. Any student who was not in attendance for pictures will have their picture taken on this day.

Way to go, Roadrunners!

Please note a quick update to our drop-off routine (starting Monday, October 26, 2026)

When signing in your student on the device in the foyer, please fill out the lunch choice sheet located right next to it if your child will be having school lunch or ordering milk. Completing this sheet—especially when arriving late—helps us ensure that every student who wants a school lunch or milk receives one. Once the sheet is filled out, your child can drop it in the office on the way to class.

Please keep in mind that if your student arrives after 11:00 AM, their preferred lunch choice may not be available.

Thank you for your cooperation!

IAR test results will be sent home with students next week

During the week of October 26-30, the results of the state-required Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) will be sent home for students in fourth through eighth grades. All students in third through eighth grades took the IAR in March of the 2025-2026 school year.

District emergency test call is now complete

The annual test of the district's emergency phone contact system was completed at 2:00 p.m. today. All families should have received a call at this time to every guardian's phone number registered with the district. If you received the call at the phone number you would like to be reached at in an emergency, there is nothing else you need to do. If you did not receive this call, please email the school’s main office to provide updated contact information that can be used to reach you in an emergency. Thank you for helping us keep our records up to date.

Health reminder from Nurse Maggie

We are now seeing many strep cases, so if your child has complaints of a sore throat, please consider having them checked. We have had a few cases of students who were just complaining of a stomachache or nausea that also tested positive for strep.

We have also now started seeing a few students with flu-like illnesses as well. Please remember students must stay home until the fever resolves for over 24 hours without medication.

Wishing everyone a healthy fall! Thank you for your partnership.

Halloween celebrations are October 30

  • Halloween celebrations, including elementary school costumes parades and classroom parties, will be held on Friday, October 30, a Morning Attendance day this year. Elementary school dismissal will be at 11:50 a.m.

  • Elementary school students may wear costumes throughout the morning. Because of the shortened day, it is recommended that all students consider wearing their costume to school in the morning.

  • Elementary students will be given a few minutes to change into their costumes before the Halloween parade, if needed, but there is no time to apply make-up or hairspray. If possible, costumes should fit over a student’s clothes.

  • All student costumes should be non-violent and age-appropriate. Pretend weapons are not allowed as part of costumes at school.

  • Food will not be a part of in-school classroom celebrations. Celebrations can include small non-food items such as stickers or pencils. Water will continue to be available to students throughout the school day, including during holiday parties.

  • The Halloween Parade at each elementary school (held outdoors weather permitting and open to family spectators) will start at 10:30 a.m. for about 15 minutes. Classroom parties will run from 10:45 -11:35 a.m. Parent volunteers are asked not to take their child home with them at the conclusion of the party but to wait for official dismissal procedures.

  • If you do not want your child to participate in Halloween activities, please contact the school’s main office.

Thank you to our families and students for helping to make Halloween activities safe and fun!

Reminder: District policy on cell phones and personal devices during school day

Per CCSD 89 policy, cell phones and other personal electronic devices must remain out of sight and may not be used during the school day. While recent state legislation mandating this takes effect in 2027–28, our district policy is already active. Devices must be put away throughout the instructional day unless an approved exception is documented with the district. This policy helps to minimize distractions, disruptions and privacy concerns. Read full FAQs for parents and students

If your child uses their phone to manage a medical condition or for an approved academic reason, families should complete the CCSD 89 Student Use of Personal Technology Waiver on an annual basis to request an exemption. Completed forms should be returned to the main office.

Reminder: Using Verkada system for building visitors

Our school uses the Verkada visitor management system for all individuals entering the building and for signing students in and out during the school day. It is an important process for keeping our students safe.

  • All adults must bring a valid photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport).

  • You will check in using an iPad in the school’s lobby.

  • Please allow an extra 5 minutes before your scheduled start time for this check-in process.

Fee waivers for school fees and school lunch program

The district uses two separate processes to determine eligibility for a waiver of school fees and for the free/reduced lunch program.

The district’s fee waiver application is available on our website at www.ccsd89.org/feewaiver or under the Board of Education tab, policy 4:140-E1 Application for Fee Waiver. The forms can be filled out and submitted with your income-verification documents directly to the district office (22W600 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn), attention Courtney Czerwinski.

If you have more than one child in the district, you may submit one application for free/reduced lunch and another application for waiver of fees. Both applications can be submitted at the same time with the necessary documentation to avoid any delay in processing.
