Anglo European School
Week Commencing: 26th January 2026
Shout out for German
#ShoutOutForGerman is a 2026 campaign (spanning Jan 19-23, following a March 2025 event) led by the German Embassy London, Goethe-Institut UK, and DAAD UK to celebrate German language learning in the UK. It encourages teachers and students to share positive stories, photos, and videos on social media to highlight the fun of learning German. The campaign invites students and teachers to share positive stories, photos and videos on social media, highlighting the importance and fun of learning German. We’ve had lots happening in the German department this week as part of the celebrations.
Visitor from Munich
We have been delighted to host Melanie Bigland, a science teacher at the Berufliche Oberschule Fürstenfeldbruck in Munich over the last 2 weeks. She is a qualified teacher of Biology, Chemistry, and Ethics in Germany and is currently leading and participating in several initiatives related to mental health, environmental sustainability, and democratic values.
This opportunity was provided under the ERASMUS Plus programme and the Paedagogischer Austauschdienst, which fund a broad range of educational objectives in Europe.
During her visit she observed lessons in Science, German, Psychology, Citizenship and Economics, met with student panels to discuss mental health, democratic values, and environmental initiatives and met with members of SLT to share her related experiences of teaching in Germany. She also joined German lessons to support with knowledge of the language, culture and literature and helped with revision classes.
It was a delight to host Melanie and we are now looking to the future and possible partnership with her school in Munich.
Year 10 Frankfurt Long Term Exchange
The long term Frankfurt group have arrived safely and are settling into school today. Gonk 9 (now officially named "Nein") enjoyed the flight and is settling into his new surroundings!
Frankfurt Work Experience Visit to Ingatestone
Nine students from Goethe Gymnasium arrived this week to undertake work experience in the UK. They visited our school on Monday morning where they excelled in a Business Studies taster lesson with Mr Knights, before meeting the Mayor of Chelmsford in the afternoon. They started their placements on Tuesday and have all settled in well to a variety of settings, which include a nursery, primary schools and a local café. Their exchange partners will then visit them in June to undertake work placements of their own in Frankfurt. This is the 23rd year of this work experience exchange, so it will not be too long before we hope to be celebrating the Silver Jubilee!
7P putting their learning into Action
Our German Expert Mentor, Mrs Porsz, has started to teach 7P this term and on Wednesday taught them actions to help them remember different pronouns. They responded with enthusiasm, as you can see on the video below, when we managed to catch them in action! This is typical of the kind of activity that we do with all our Key Stage 3 German classes where we involve songs, actions and videos to enhance the learning.
Year 10 partnered with a Cambridge student
10A/Gm1 have been in contact with a Cambridge student, Orlando, who is currently on his year abroad. This week they posed various questions to him about his love of German, Germany and his year abroad so far. He is currently in Padua in Italy and he will be departing for Germany in the spring. He chose Eichhörnchen (squirrel) as his favourite German word, Maultaschen as his favourite German food that he first tasted on his own exchange in Year 8 and he told them that he chose to learn German at university because it tends to be one of the languages with the most options. He loves studying a vast range of German language, literature and film through his university course.
PPE Results for Year 11
The Hall was filled with a mixture of anticipation and nervous excitement on Thursday morning as Year 11 students received their GCSE PPE results. This important milestone gave students the opportunity to reflect on their achievements, identify areas for improvement, and consider how they can refine their revision strategies as they prepare for the next stage of their educational journey. We were extremely proud of their achievements and look forward to supporting them on this final leg of their GCSE journey.
IB Spanish students bring Lorca to life!
Lower Sixth IB Spanish students brought "La casa de Bernarda Alba" off the page and onto the stage this week, transforming their literature study into a mini‑production complete with props, wigs, Bernarda’s iconic bastón and, stealing the show, a cuddly gorilla standing in for the lamb! Students embraced the challenge of memorising lines and stepping fully into character, using performance to deepen their understanding of Lorca’s themes. This creative work will now feed directly into their written Spanish, as they move on to producing pieces on the value of the arts and crafting their own theatrical reviews.

Speedbird-Z Influencer
While most students are focusing solely on their upcoming exams, Year 11 student Till is already cleared for takeoff. Having recently been selected as one of only 20 Speedbird-Z Influencers for British Airways, Till is turning his passion for aviation into a professional head start.
Till’s journey started at just 14 years old when he was awarded two prestigious scholarships from The Air League. This support allowed him to become one of the youngest pilots in the country to fly a glider solo.
However, Till realised that flying the aircraft was only half the journey. Recognising that gliding is often underrepresented online, he began building a unique social media presence. His talent for content creation caught the eye of the UK’s flag carrier, leading to his current role representing Speedbird-Z, British Airways' dedicated platform for student career development.
As part of a select cohort of influencers, Till’s role is highly creative and fast-paced. He regularly travels to Heathrow Airport to capture cinematic footage of aircraft, which he then edits on his phone into high-impact short-form videos for Instagram and TikTok.
"I feel incredibly lucky to have discovered what I wanted to do at such a young age," Till says. This role is an invaluable chance to make himself known to the company and network with the professionals who are already doing the job.
Despite the excitement of working with a global brand and being invited to Parliament to speak on behalf of The Air League, Till remains grounded. His ultimate ambition is to secure a place on British Airways' fully-funded pilot training programme.
To get there, he knows he needs more than just a social media following—he needs the grades. Till is balancing the influencer responsibilities with his GCSE studies. His hard work is paying off; he recently achieved a stellar set of 7s and 8s in his PPEs (mocks) and plans to continue his journey into A-Levels next year.

World Scout Jamboree, Poland
Many congratulations to Year 8 student, Alexander who has been selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree, in Poland during the summer of 2027.
Alexander started Scouting aged 6 as a Beaver, moving to Cubs aged 8, and became a Scout aged 10. There have been a lot of hikes and camps in that time, as well as badges earned, and special events like swim galas.
Since last summer, Alexander has been working through a process of written application and practical skills weekend to be selected for this amazing international scouting experience, 3-week long trip to the World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) to Poland.
He will be attending training camps during 2026 before going to the Jamboree, to develop practical skills, strengthen teamwork, and build personal confidence and resilience.
The WSJ is a fantastic opportunity for cultural exchange, friendship and adventure, with plenty of self-development along the way. Here is the link if you would like to learn more about this event: 26th World Scout Jamboree Poland 2027 .
The theme for the 2027 WSJ in Gdańsk, Poland, is "Bravely," aiming to inspire young people to act courageously for humanity and the planet by taking bold steps, embracing diversity, and fostering self-discovery, with core pillars focusing on being true to oneself, respecting others, and fighting for a sustainable future. As well as attending the camp of 40,000 scouts from all over the world, there will be visits within the local area.
The WSJ trip, kit, and training costs around £3,500 per person. The UK is in the highest fee bracket, which significantly subsidises the cost paid by young people in developing countries, enabling them to attend.
Fundraising is an important part of the journey to prepare for the Jamboree, and Alexander and another member of the 1st Chelmsford Scout Group are planning a range of fundraising events including quiz nights (see the poster for a quiz on Saturday 7th February), a midsummer picnic with live band, bag packs at supermarkets, Christmas crafts afternoons, sponsored swim / hike, and dog walking.
