Principal's Message

Dear John Reed Families,

I continue to be deeply saddened by the tragic events in Texas. I want to ensure our families that our staff are committed to keeping students safe. We have just updated our School Safety Plan with our ELAC and School Site council committees. We practice drills regularly and address unsafe situations on campus.

At John Reed, we want a safe experience for all our students. I'd like to address the use of racial slurs on campus. Racist comments and language will not be tolerated. Please speak with your children about the use of racial slurs and how they are unkind, hurtful, damaging and scarring for another child.

Here are some resources:

I've attached some parent resources for talking to your children about school and world violence.

We have been getting many phone calls about after school care for next year. The YMCA will not have any information about next year's enrollment until July 15.

Thank you for your partnership.

Warmly,

Principal Young

How to Talk to Kids About School Shootings - Child Mind Institute

Anxiety over school shootings has become a common fear in America. When something that once seemed unthinkable happens with some regularity, added to our feeling of horror that it's happened (again!) is another kind of alarm: Could this happen at my child's school?

Responding to School Violence: Tips for Administrators

Violence such as high profile school shootings can cause concern within school communities, even if they are not directly affected by the event(s). Adults and students struggle to understand why these events happen and, more importantly, how they can be prevented.

How to Talk to Kids About School Shootings

"School shootings" are two words no parent ever wants to hear in the same sentence. But news of these tragic events is now so familiar, the topic is unavoidable. Unlike other conversations you have with your kids about scary stuff in the news, talks about school shootings are much more emotional, for both you and your kids.

High profile acts of violence, particularly in schools, can confuse and frighten children who may feel in danger or worry that their friends or loved-ones are at risk. They will look to adults for information and guidance on how to react.
