From the Program Directors' Corner

Happy Autumn, Mountaineers and Friends!

The Library Science Program faculty have been busy! On October 1st, we submitted our application to the American Library Association for consideration for Pre-Candidacy status. We hope to receive notification of the ALA’s decision in late November. Thank you to everyone - students, alumni, university administrators and staff – who have helped us get to this point. We know many of you have been wanting to see us move in this direction for some time.

In September, we held our first Town Hall, which students, alumni, and stakeholders were invited to attend. During this meeting, we outlined our timeline for ALA Initial Accreditation and shared information about opportunities for a Public Library Certificate, 078 Media Supervisor Licensure, and upcoming studies abroad. We are growing quickly, so please stay tuned for new opportunities for students and alumni.

You can catch MLS faculty at NCLSMA, NCLA, and the AASL National Conference this fall – we hope to see you!

We’ll also be hosting two of our
Pink Noise Speaker Series events this fall.

On October 23 at 6:00 PM, Dr. Sam Wineburg, author of the book Verified will speak about artificial intelligence and misinformation.

App State’s own Jewel Davis, chair of the Caldecott Award Committee, will speak on November 5 at 7:00 PM about her experiences of being inside the world of book awards.

As always, Pink Noise events are free for everyone and delivered through Zoom. Visit our website to find registration information: https://mls.appstate.edu/lets-connect/pink-noise-speaker-series

If you have anything you’d like to share with us or if we can celebrate you, please let us know! Moellerra@appstate.edu or becnelke@appstate.edu. We’re always thrilled to hear from you.

Dr. McAllister @ the Charleston Conference on Collections

Dr. McAllister will be co-presenting with Professor Bobby Hollandsworth (Clemson University) at the upcoming Charleston Conference on collections in November. Their research topic, Decoding the Stress of Collection Management, will explore why few studies have focused on the specific role collection management plays in academic library work-related stress.

Global Partners in Learning

Crystal Beverly, graduate student in 5010 Collection Development & Management, is extending Dr. Robin Moeller's partnership with The Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa, Kenya. Beverly's hope is that her work will support students as they become international leaders with their hearts moored to their localities. Beverly envisions their library stimulating creativity, intellectual curiosity and honest inquiry.

Recruiting Industry Leaders

We have been recruiting industry leaders to serve in ad hoc advisory roles for our Library Science program. Dr. Frye has recently secured the following tech advisors:

Jeffrey Cross, co-founder and CEO at Nx

Tim Schwartz, Senior Manger @ Sony AI

Victor Vrantchan, Software Engineer @ Apple

We look forward to seeing how these innovators help us shape our program in the days and years ahead. If you have connections in Library & Information Science industry who would be interested in serving as an advisor, please reach out to our program directors.

Big Moments in Libraries & Information Centers

Banned Books Week - October 5-11, 2025

Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of the freedom to read since 1982, is observed the last week of September. Each year, librarians, booksellers, teachers and countless others take this opportunity to highlight the importance of intellectual freedom and remind us not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted. Contact ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) with questions.

Banned Websites Awareness Day - Wednesday of Banned Books Week

In an extension of the observance of Banned Books Week, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) designated Wednesdays of Banned Books Week as Banned Websites Awareness Day. By doing so, it's AASL's hope to bring attention to the overly aggressive filtering of educational and social websites used by students and educators. Contact ALA's American Association of School Librarians (AASL, a division of ALA) with questions.

TeenTober - October

TeenTober is a nationwide celebration hosted by libraries every October and aims to celebrate teens, promote year-round teen services and the innovative ways teen services helps teens learn new skills, and fuel their passions in and outside the library. TeenTober replaces YALSA’s previous Teen Read Week™ and Teen Tech Week™ celebrations, allowing libraries the flexibility to celebrate all types of literacies according to their library’s schedule. Library staff are encouraged to utilize this new celebration to advocate for and raise awareness of the importance of year-round teen services in libraries. Contact ALA's Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA, a division of ALA) with questions.

National Friends of Libraries Week - October 19-25, 2025

Friends of Libraries groups now have their very own national week of celebration, courtesy of United for Libraries: The Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (a division of ALA). National Friends of Libraries Week offers a two-fold opportunity to celebrate Friends – promoting the group in the community, raising awareness and increasing membership and also giving libraries and boards of trustees the opportunity to recognize the Friends for their help and support of the library. Contact ALA's United for Libraries with questions.

International Games Month - November

International Games Month, first celebrated in 2008 as National Games Day, focuses on the social and recreational side of gaming. Gaming at the library encourages patrons of all ages to interact with diverse peers, share their expertise and develop new strategies for gaming and learning. At the library, kids can socialize with their friends and play board and video games while surrounded by books, librarians and a real world of knowledge.
