Spanish Language and Culture (Mr. Fontalvo, Ms. Gonzalez)

Last week, our students kicked off Unit 2! They learned the days of the week, the months of the year, how to say dates in Spanish, and explored both Hispanic and American holidays. Next week, we’ll continue building on that knowledge as students learn vocabulary to talk about the seasons and describe the weather in Spanish. ¡Vamos a aprender mucho!

Spanish II (Ms. Wooten, Ms. Henderson, Mr. Almanza)

This week, we continued our vocabulary study and read chapters 5-8 of Esperanza. Next week, we will finish up the book, adding additional vocabulary and learning about political asylum. The week of November 17th , we will have a final review of all vocab and events of the book Esperanza before taking our final test of the unit. Looking ahead, in our second unit, we will focus on the 2 past tenses in Spanish and how we use them together to tell stories about the past. Students will interpret a variety of different stories and build up to describing them on their own in the past, and eventually creating their own story, told in the past tense!

Please encourage your student to be reviewing ALL of their dictionary pages from this unit in preparation for the upcoming test.

Spanish Humanities, grade 7 (Ms. Henderson)

Last week, students created a beautiful altar in celebration of Day of the Dead and ended the advisory with a lovely class party where they took a moment to honor and celebrate those who are no longer with us. This week, we’ve returned to Lazarillo de Tormes and are becoming “human thesauruses” as we expand our vocabularies by exploring synonyms and antonyms of the words we’re learning.

Spanish Humanities, grade 8 (Ms. Wooten)

This week we kicked off of new unit learning about Sandra Cisneros, the pioneer of Chicana literature. We began reading the fist vignette of Casa en Mango Street and had group conversations introducing the main themes of the book. Next week will continue to read vignettes from Casa and Mango Street, beginning to analyze Cisneros's use of figurative language to describe the characters and imitate her style of writing to describe people in our own lives.

If you have not yet bought the book, please do that asap. We are reading this edition (but you can buy from any source):

French Language & Culture (Ms. Bullock, Mr. Almanza)

This week students will be learning about the seasons in French. We will also be learning about the weather--both here in DC and around the world. See if your students cn tell you about the weather in French. :) Students should spend at least 5 minutes reviewing every night to ensure a strong start to unit 2! Students have resources from class and/or on Canvas.

In Madame Bullock's class, students came up with a list of incentives they would like to work towards. If you have the means and will to donate (or you're just interested in what middle schoolers like), you can find their list here. :)
