MS 50 Updates: Week of January 8, 2024
College Awareness Month
MS 50 is proud to take part in College Awareness Month! As part of our celebration, all students are invited to wear college gear this week Wednesday, January 10. Another key initiative we are excited to bring back this year is our 7th grade college visits which began last week with a trip to John Jay College. Our goal is to get every single interested college student on a college campus this month! Shout out to our incredible Community Schools team which helps make this dream a reality.

Classroom Spotlight: ELT
Literacy Magazine - Sneak Peek!
MS 50 Literary Magazine is a student-run publication that spotlights the talented writers and artists in our community. We are looking for writers, poets, artists and song writers to contribute their work for the first full edition by March 1st, 2024. To submit your work, please email Ms. Kalish (SKalish2@schools.nyc.gov).
Videography
Our Videography ELT has been hard at work producing weekly announcements for the whole school each Monday. This week we have highlights from the MS 50 Cheer Squad and the Boys Basketball team in their victory on Friday!
Check out this week's video and past shows at ms50.org/announcements!
Upcoming ELT Change Period
We are approaching our mid-year ELT change period where students have the opportunity to choose new ELT clubs if they wish. More information about new ELT options and a form for students who wish to change their courses will be available at the end of January. More information will be provided in the newsletter when it is available.
PTA Updates
January PTA Meeting Summary
At our January PTA meeting, we took a tour of the rooftop space where we are excited to launch a partnership with City Growers to install a beehive to help ensure a spot for pollinators on the Southside which will also be an educational tool for our students. We began to dream of ways to utilize our rooftop space through fundraising for a green roof and other initiatives. We also finalized plans to apply for 501(c)3 statues which we hope to do in the coming weeks. Our next meeting will be Thursday, February 1st at 6:00PM.
Fundraising Committee and Events
The fundraising committee has formed and is prepared to launch several initiatives this winter and spring! Our first fundraising event of the new year will be at the boys basketball game this Wednesday where we will be selling popcorn and drinks. If you'd like to volunteer to help serve or are interested in donating baked goods or other snacks, please email our Parent Coordinator, Edda Figueroa!
El Puente Three Kings Show
Our community school partner El Puente cordially invites you to their 37th annual Three Kings Celebration, "We Dream a World Together". Come for engaging live performances, where you will be encouraged to interact with the youth artivists in an immersive on-stage action. They are showcasing the dreams of the youth for the world and highlighting their relationship with justice. They’ll be expressing their dreams for all youth to live in a world that is safe and self-determined through their breaking, acting, dancing, and artistry!
Register online for free for the show, this Saturday, January 13th at 4pm. The 1pm show is SOLD OUT.

One of our goals this year is for every student at MS 50 to complete 30 minutes of i-Ready ELA lessons and 30 minutes of i-Ready math lessons as part of their homework every week. Teachers will check the previous week’s work every Monday. Students can use their @nycstudents account to log into i-Ready by visiting clever.com.
If logging in on an iPad, you must first download and login to the Clever app. You can then launch i-Ready from Clever and students will be logged in. Download this information sheet for more detailed instructions.
