Dear KRS Families,

I hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

December is here, and next week on Tuesday and Wednesday are the shopping days for the KRS Holiday Boutique. Thank you to the parent volunteers for making the KRS Holiday Boutique possible for our students.

The school looks amazingly festive thanks to Mrs. de Freitas and Mrs. Zurich. We appreciate their spirit and dedication to KRS!

Please make sure that you have marked your calendars with the important dates in this newsletter. December 12, 2023 is the referendum vote. Please do not forget to vote! The Madison Special Education Advisory Group meeting is on December 13, 2023.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Art Room News - by Ms. Obermaier

Greetings from the Art Room! Grades 1-5 have been working on projects inspired by Native

American Art and Culture. First grade had fun with printmaking creating flint corn with bubble

wrap. Second grade was inspired by the beautiful book "Still This Love Goes On" illustrated by

Cree artist Julie Flett to create a painting where the sky meets the ground in a horizon line.

Third grade is working on intricate Woodland Style collages inspired by Norvall Morriseau.

Fourth grade has just begun telling a story with a painting inspired by Chumash Rock painting

and the Southern Californian Native artist Mitchell Robles. Fifth grade is creating a mixed media

project of birch woods after talking about the importance of birch trees to the Ojibwe tribe.

Lastly, Kindergarten has been learning about texture in art. We have created illustrations of

fluffy clouds and pointy quills creating our very own Percy, the porcupine. Ask your kindergarten

student to name some textures and let them sing along to the Scratch Garden video on You

Tube about texture!

Greetings from the STEAM Lab! - by Mrs. Conner

Kindergarten students are learning about the Engineering Design Process and using it for a polar bear project. Students will learn about polar bears, plan and design a den for a mama bear and her cubs, and then build the den using materials such as popsicle sticks, cotton balls, pipe cleaners, and legos. First Graders will be learning about Growth Mindset. We will read “Giraffes Can’t Dance”, discuss the lesson of the story, and then apply Growth Mindset to a STEAM challenge. Students will persevere and draw a giraffe more than once with the goal of improving each time. After drawing students will reflect on their work, discussing their glows and grows. Second Graders will apply the Engineering Design Process to a Marble Maze project. Students will plan and then construct a marble maze on a paper plate using straws. The goal is to have a marble travel from one side of the plate to the other. Third Graders will be beginning a Technology unit. Students will be doing Stop Motion Animation; it is an animated filmmaking technique in which objects are physically manipulated in small increments between different slides on the computer so that they will appear to exhibit independent motion or change when the series of frames is played back. Fourth Graders are beginning a coding unit and coding their own game. In teams, students will decide on their game concept and the purpose of the game. They will answer questions like, what is the player of the game trying to achieve while playing? Who are the characters, what are the obstacles, and what are the commands, or codes, that the player uses to win the game? Using poster board and duct tape, students will create a grid of their 3-D game. Students will then write lines of codes while they play. Fifth Graders are beginning a Technology unit. Students will create a personal Coat of Arms crest using the computer program Tinkercad. Tinkercad is a 3D modeling program that uses and combines shapes to create designs. Students will sketch and plan their crest, construct it on Tinkercad, and 3D print in. The crest will be printed with a small hole at the top so it can be used as a keychain.

Recess - Please make sure your child is prepared to play in the cold!

We will be going outside for recess throughout the school year, even during cold winter days. Indoor recess occurs only if the temperature and/or the play area is unsafe because of the weather conditions. Please make sure that your child is prepared to play in cold weather. Thank you!

Car Line - Very important!

Under no circumstance should you leave your car while waiting in the car line. Not only is it very dangerous, but it also delays the entire drop-off/pick-up process. There are staff members assigned to the car line area during the drop-off/pick-up times in case you need assistance. Thank you!
