Weekly Community Updates - August 29
Dear Students and Families,
As we end August, this is a great time for families to log into ParentVue to check your student's grades. If you have any questions, you can reach out to a counselor or your student's teachers. As a reminder, we have our Back to School Night later than other schools because our freshmen are preparing their Freshmen Orientation Project. Freshmen are interviewing staff members and learning about Oceana. Ask your freshmen who they interviewed and what they learned!
After three full weeks of school, I hope students enjoy their three day weekend. Oceana will be closed on Monday, September 1st. We resume on Tuesday, September 2nd with an odd day.
Take care,
Maritza Torres
Annual Trivia Night!
Get ready for a fun night of trivia, food, and community!
Join us for the Oceana High School Annual Trivia Night on Tuesday, October 14 from 6:30–8:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.
Hosted by the OSPT0, this event isn’t just about showing off your trivia skills—it’s a chance for families to connect with others, build community, and get more involved in the school. We’ll have plenty of pizza (vegan option included!) and soft drinks, all for a suggested donation of $5 per person or $20 per family (cash or check at the door).
Did you know? The OSPTO plays a big role in supporting our school—funding student clubs and sports, interim courses, classroom needs, and much more. By joining us, you’re helping strengthen the opportunities available to every Oceana student.
Please RSVP here or with the QR code so we know how much pizza to order.
We can’t wait to see you there—bring your family, your friends, and your best trivia brain!

We'll be offering two levels of peer support.
Drop-in Tutoring
- No commitment, no sign-up required, students can come whenever they need it
- Work with a peer tutor on assignments, prepare for assessments
- There's no question we can't tackle together!
Math Coaching
- Students commit to at least one day a week. Sign up required via this form.
- Form a long-term partnership with a peer coach, supervised closely by staff, individualizing math practice based on your student's needs
- Students work not only on homework but on tackling gaps in their prior math learning

Safety Tips for Students
SamTrans prides itself on its record of passenger safety. We put together some commonsense tips to stay safe on SamTrans.
Free Brunch and Lunch
Every student is entitled to one free breakfast and one free lunch every school day regardless of filling out an application for free/reduced lunch. Filling out applications for free/reduced lunch and qualifying will result in additional benefits such as a free Samtrans bus pass that can be picked up at the school office. Visit the district website for additional information about Food Services.
Cell Phone Policy
Cell phones are a major distraction from learning and socializing in schools. Our school policy is that devices are stored off and in a place that is not visible for the duration of each class time, including walking to and from the bathroom, library or counseling hall during their class time. Staff members have the option of requisitioning the device and turning it over to the front office. The student can retrieve their device at the end of the school day. If a student repeatedly fails to adhere to this policy, they should expect to turn in their device into the office every morning.
Freshmen Elections
Today, the Freshmen class was in the theater voting on their class representatives. The candidates did such a fantastic job with their speeches! We look forward to supporting our freshmen class.

Prestige Portraits will be at Oceana for senior portraits on November 6th and November 7th from 1:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Prestige Portraits will send an email to students with students' assigned appointment time.
