Celebrating Community and Diversity at NPE Celebrating Community and Diversity at NPE

I continue to be so proud and honored to lead this incredible community at New Prospect Elementary! Over the past few weeks, we’ve celebrated two amazing events that truly showcase the heart and spirit of NPE—and neither would have been possible without our phenomenal volunteers.

Taste of New Prospect was an unforgettable evening where over 20 countries shared their rich cultures and delicious foods with us. The entertainment was just as spectacular, including performances from some of our very own talented students! While the pictures below capture glimpses of the night, they can’t fully convey the magic we all felt together.

Then, this past Saturday, nearly 100 volunteers came together for Hands on New Prospect, and the impact was incredible! We planted 250 daffodils in honor of children who died in the Holocaust, bringing our total to 1,000 daffodils—a powerful symbol of remembrance and hope. Our amazing (and strong!) volunteers also spread bags and bags and bags of mulch, cleaned up trash, painted doors, and gave our campus a fresh, beautiful look. Their hard work ensures that NPE remains a place where diversity is honored and our environment reflects the pride we all share in our school.

Thank you to every volunteer, family, and staff member who helped make these events possible. Your dedication and love for our school continue to inspire me every day.

As we look ahead, I’m excited to celebrate Kindness Day tomorrow and continue honoring the diversity that makes NPE such a special place. Together, we make New Prospect shine!

From the Proudest Principal,

Amy Lemons

P.S. Today, we pause to honor and thank all of our veterans for their service and sacrifice. Your courage and dedication protect the freedoms we cherish every day. Happy Veterans Day!

Does your family need a little help?

We recognize that some families in our school community rely on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) to help meet monthly food needs. The Georgia Department of Human Services has announced that November SNAP benefits may be delayed due to a pause in federal funding.

We understand this news may bring stress and uncertainty for some families. Please know you are not alone — our school and Fulton County Schools are here to support you.

To help families during this time, we are launching the ConnectFulton Food Initiative. We are partnering with food banks, churches, and community organizations across the county to ensure families have access to groceries and meals. A full list of nearby food resources is available HERE.

If your family has a critical need for food, clothing or shelter, please reach out to Mrs. Christina McLeod at mcleodcr@fultonschools.org (will be confidential).

We are committed to ensuring our students and families have access to the necessary resources to promote the learning and well-being of our students. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need assistance or have questions.

What are we doing in Brain Building? What are we doing in Brain Building?

Health with Mrs. Friedman

When the Strong4Life team from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta visited NPE in September, one of the four healthy habits they taught us about was “Eat Smarter, Drink Water!” This month’s health lesson was all about the importance of hydration and the amazing things that water can do to for our bodies! Students learned that water supports almost all body functions, including digestion and immunity. Students also learned that drinking water is especially important when you are active, exercising and playing out in the sun. Strategies to make water more exciting, such as adding ice or fresh fruit, were brainstormed. Students also reviewed the “just a little bit” drinks that contain lots of sugar, and how that sugar can affect our body and mind. Students were encouraged to find a water bottle that they enjoy drinking water from to motivate them to drink more water.

Creative Thinking with Ms. Anderson & Mrs. Share

This month, 1st-5th grade students learned a new creative brainstorming technique called SCAMPER. SCAMPER allows us to make small changes to existing ideas to create something new and different! Each letter represents a different opportunity for design. You can see what each of the letters mean below. To practice SCAMPER, students used the topic of Fall and came up with new ideas for corn mazes, fall decorations, and even the party game bobbing for apples.

Kindergarten students

Kindergarten students experimented with music through an app called Blob Opera. This gave students the opportunity to take the creativity skills we are learning and combine it with music, allowing them to experiment with tone and pitch in a fun, experimental fashion. They created and recorded their own operas as well as listened to musical pieces from around the world.

Guidance with Mrs. McLeod

  • In Counseling Brain Building lessons, Students explored their interests and learned how their interests can lead them to future careers. They learned about and used our brand-new Career Exploration App : Schoolinks to complete some "would you rather" quizzes to explore different jobs and fields that might interest them.

'Would You Rather' is a career interest inventory assessment that uses Holland Codes to match you with one of six Holland personality types:

  • Realistic
  • Investigative
  • Artistic
  • Social
  • Enterprising
  • Conventional

You can access this app through classlink at home if you'd like to explore more!

Media Center with Ms. Spitzner

We are officially done with our Digital Citizenship lessons, and have the Common Sense Media badge to prove it! During this round of Brain Building, grades 1, 2, and 4 learned about media literacy. First graders talked about the importance of critical thinking when browsing the internet. They learned to ask questions and read more to decide if what they see is true. Second graders practiced giving credit when using online articles by listing the article's title, author, and/or website. Fourth graders talked about a creator's rights and responsibilities, and vowed never to steal someone's work and claim it as their own.

Third graders wrapped up their Digital Citizenship lessons with a conversation about creating safe passwords and protecting them from others. We examined different hypothetical scenarios (such as seeing someone else's password by accident) and how we'd handle that with integrity and compassion.

Next up is research skills! Kindergarten already started by practicing inquiry. We asked "who/what/where/when/why" questions about leaves, then read a book together to see if our questions were answered - and made plans to read more if not! Fifth graders revisited Galileo, an online research database, and how it can help them when researching in their classrooms. They also learned about the difference between sources and search engines, and should now know why Google is not considered a source!
