Focus: Supporting Every Learner, Supporting Every Family

This Month's Topic: Executive Functioning 101:

The Keys to Student Success Executive functions are the cognitive skills necessary for planning, focusing attention, remembering instructions, and juggling multiple tasks. This parent session provides a foundational overview of how these skills develop and why they are critical for academic and social success. Parents will leave with a clear understanding of the "CEO of the brain" and actionable tools to scaffold these skills at home.

This event is a great opportunity for families and educators to gain valuable insights and resources to support students with special needs. We look forward to seeing you there! Please remember that all past episodes are uploaded to our district website/YouTube channel.

Instructional Coach Instructional Coach

Dear K–4 Families,

Happy February I’m excited to share what students in grades K–4 are learning and writing about during Module 3 of Wit & Wisdom/Great Minds.

Kindergarten - America Then and Now

Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts that name what is being written about and supply some information about the topic.

First Grade- Powerful Forces

Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure.

Second Grade - Civil Rights Heroes

Write narratives to recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

Third Grade - A New Home

Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

  1. Establish a situation and introduce a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally.

  2. Use dialogue and descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings to develop experiences and events or show the response of characters to situations.

  3. Use temporal words and phrases to signal event order.

  4. Provide a sense of closure.

Fourth Grade- The Redcoats are Coming

Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.

  1. Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which related ideas are grouped to support the writer's purpose.

  2. Provide reasons that are supported by facts and details.

  3. Link opinion and reasons using words and phrases (e.g., for instance, in order to, in addition).

  4. Provide a concluding statement or section related to the opinion presented.
