Reading Tip: Help Children Break Words into Syllables

Learning to break words into syllables helps students in grades 3-5 become more confident readers and spellers. Syllables are the "beats" in a word, and recognizing them helps children decode unfamiliar words and spell longer ones correctly. For example, the word fantastic can be broken into three syllables: fan-tas-tic. Practicing this skills builds awareness of how words are structured and improves fluency. Encourage your child to clap, tap, or snap the beats in words they read or write - making word learning active and fun!
