Academy Weekly Newsletter - 10/9
From The Academy at Sturgis Brown High School
Dear parents, guardians, and students,
**Every week a different Academy student will act as a student ambassador for the weekly newsletter. Their message will feature some information about the student, The Academy, and what happened throughout the week.**
Hello,
My name is Dace L. Barwell. I enjoy writing poetry and music lyrics as well as gaming and hanging out with my girlfriend. When I'm older, I would like to be a multidisciplinary artist. Some forms of art I want to pursue are visual, musical, literary, and applied art. Things I value include family, friends, morals, and my privacy.
This week in The Academy:
- On Monday we started a new chapter in science and in English we read 10 pages of Fahrenheit 451. In math we had to do Get More Math.
- On Tuesday Dylan and I got to do a penny boat lab in science during Scooper Time.
- On Wednesday we had to do two 5 question assignments while watching a video in American Gov. and got left on a cliff hanger in English class.
- Today in science we did a murder mystery, in gov. we had a workday, and in English we read about how Guy Montag burnt Captain Beatty to death!
The Academy is somewhere, to me, where I can unapologetically be me. It's a safe place for many of the students that come here every day. A place where you can get your diploma at the speed that you feel is necessary. The teachers -rather than judge you- understand, defend, and support you. When you're a kid in high school that struggles to focus for whatever reason, it can feel like you're drowning, but The Academy is the fresh breath of air in the ocean of emotions that overwhelm you constantly.
Event Information
Students will be delivering 3 minute long speeches to a panel of judges (this could be you!). These speeches will be passionate pleas from a leader whose utopian country has recently become a dystopia. How do they get their utopias back on track?
12th grade English students will present on the 23rd

English Notes by Ms. R
English students write a journal entry, practice a spelling word, and learn a new vocabulary word every day. They also practice grammar. This week students continued learning the building blocks of English grammar by studying proper sentence structure, fragment sentences, and run-on sentences. They also learned how to spell commonly misspelled words such as calendar and category and the root word rupt as well as words like erupt and rupture.
We also continued reading Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 this week in class. The students are enjoying the surprise twists and turns in this novel!
The students have completed building their utopian countries! Over the long weekend, these countries will be examined by an expert in political science. This political advisor will find weaknesses in the government, economic, and/or cultural structure of the countries the students created. One to three problem areas will be found and leveraged to turn the utopian countries into dystopian countries!
Students are also reading an independent reading book throughout the course of this trimester. This trimester they are reading dystopian novels such as: 1984 or Animal Farm by George Orwell, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, etc . Students were able to select a book from 25+ different fiction dystopian books. The students read this book every day and write a paragraph about what they read. At the end of the trimester, they will complete a final project about the novel they selected.
If you would like to know what is coming up in Academy English, please feel free to review my trimester lesson plans. They can be found here.

I hope everyone enjoys Native American Day and has a wonderful four day weekend!
Principles of Algebra and Geometry by Mr. Leonhardt
This week students reviewed and learned new strategies for solving algebraic equations. This included solving simple equations as well as more complex equations that included fractions. They also learned to solve common formulas they encounter for a specific variable within the formula which can be very helpful in other content areas like science and finance. They will have an assessment over these topics next week.
