Principal's Message - Building Excellence Together

Dear MMK Families,

What an exciting week ahead for our Owls! I'm thrilled to share some tremendous opportunities and achievements happening in our school community.

First, congratulations to our High School Girls Basketball team for advancing to the District 4 Tournament! Their first playoff game is Tuesday, February 10th at 6:00 PM in Pe Ell. Let's pack the gym and show these incredible athletes our Owl Pride!

Looking ahead to spring, registration is now open for our spring sports season through FinalForms. High school baseball, track & field, and golf begin March 2nd, with middle school sports starting March 9th. Please register soon to ensure your student-athlete is ready for day one.

I'm especially proud to announce our new Pathway to Employment Program for juniors and seniorsβ€”a partnership with Mason County Economic Development Council that connects our students with local employers and builds real-world career skills. This is exactly the kind of opportunity that prepares our students to be the successful citizens envisioned in our mission.

Finally, this week's GRIT Award winners remind us why MMK is so special. From Lucy Masteller's patience in helping a classmate, to Violet Chinneth's compassion for a struggling first-grader, our students are demonstrating leadership, perseverance, and kindness every single day.

Remember: Late start this Wednesday, 2/11.

Together, we're building excellence!

πŸ“’ Exciting New Opportunity for MMK Juniors & Seniors! πŸ“’

Mary M. Knight School District is proud to announce the Pathway to Employment Program β€” a partnership with the Mason County Economic Development Council designed to help our students take their first confident steps into the workforce.

What is it?

This program connects work-ready juniors and seniors with local employers in our community. Students who complete the certification earn a Pathway to Employment Card that demonstrates they've been verified by their instructors as:

βœ“ Dependable and punctual

βœ“ Strong communicators

βœ“ Team players and leaders

βœ“ Academically prepared

βœ“ Professional and ready to work

Why does it matter?

When your student presents this card to a local business, it shows employers they're prepared for interviews and entry-level jobs. It's a competitive advantage that helps students stand out while building real-world experience before graduation.

What will students gain?

Resume-building credentials

Interview practice and confidence

Networking with local employers

Early career exploration

Professional skills that last a lifetime

Students should talk with Mr. Johannes (CTE Director) or Ms. Fisher (School Counselor) to begin the process.

Parents β€” we encourage you to talk with your student about this opportunity. It's a structured, supportive bridge between education and employment that helps prepare them for life after high school while strengthening our local community.

Together, we're building pathways to success for our students and our community!

GRIT Award Winners - Week of February 2, 2026

What an incredible week of leadership, perseverance, and kindness at Mary M. Knight! This week's GRIT Award nominations showcase the very best of our Owls, from our youngest learners to our graduating seniors.

Leading with Heart and Helping Hands

Leadership took many forms this week. Fourth-grader Lucy Masteller demonstrated what it truly means to lift others up when she patiently worked with a classmate to find and correct a math mistake rather than simply pointing out the error. First-grader Kynslee Lingnau shows up to reading group every day ready to learn, eager for challenges, and setting a wonderful example for her peers.

Our senior leaders Carissa Reeves and Brooke Mirka went above and beyond to welcome our 6th graders to secondary lunch, engaging with students and helping them feel at home in their new environment. This is what leaving a legacy looks like! Brooke also showed exceptional maturity and courage in handling a difficult conversation with grace and honesty.

Perseverance in Action

GRIT means pushing through when things get tough. Second-grader Charlotte Metzger has been working hard to stay focused on her learning, taking ownership by completing assignments and asking clarifying questions. Sixth-grader Avery Lohman exemplifies dedication and honesty, always striving to do better and working hard on her classwork. Fellow 6th grader Tristan Persell brings that same dedication and honest effort to his work every day.

Our juniors and seniors who took the ASVAB test deserve special recognition for giving their all on a challenging test early Thursday morningβ€”especially impressive after staying late for Senior Night the evening before!

Kindness and Character

Sometimes GRIT means doing the right thing when no one is watching. Second-grader Ronan Jones has grown tremendously this year, showing determination to help others and make good choices. Eighth-grader Violet Chinneth spotted a upset first-grader sitting out during PE and took the time to check on them and get helpβ€”showing the caring spirit that makes MMK special. Fourth-grader Cloie Kitchell is working hard and making great choices on the bus every day.

Thank you to all our students for showing what it means to have GRIT and embody our Owl values. We're proud of each and every one of you!
