Berkeley County Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Erin Butler as principal of Mill Creek Elementary School as the school begins an exciting new chapter in its inaugural year as a Kindergarten through 5th Grade elementary school.

With more than 20 years of experience in education, Butler brings a strong background in instructional leadership, elementary education, and special education, along with a deep commitment to helping every student succeed. A graduate of West Virginia University and Marshall University, she is also a National Board Certified Teacher.

Butler began her career in 2003 as a Pre-K teacher in Cumberland, Maryland, before joining Berkeley County Schools in 2004. She spent nearly two decades teaching first grade at Back Creek Valley Elementary School, where she also served as the school's instructional coordinator and teacher leader. In 2023, she joined the administrative team at Mill Creek Intermediate School as interim assistant principal before being named assistant principal later that year. Throughout the school's transition from an intermediate school to a K-5 elementary school, Butler has played a key role in supporting students, staff, and families.

"I am honored to serve as the principal of Mill Creek Elementary School during such a meaningful time in our school's history," Butler said. "As we open our doors as a K-5 school, we have a unique opportunity to build a strong foundation where every child feels valued, challenged, and supported. I believe strong schools are built on relationships, and I look forward to working alongside our dedicated staff, students, and families to create an environment where every learner can thrive."

Executive Director of Elementary School Leadership Lewis Mullenax said Butler's experience and leadership make her the ideal choice to guide Mill Creek Elementary into its inaugural year.

"Mrs. Butler has been instrumental in helping lead MCES through this important transition, and she understands the unique opportunities that come with establishing a new K-5 school community," said Mullenax. "Her experience as both an outstanding classroom teacher and an instructional leader, combined with her genuine care for students and families, will help ensure MCES begins this new chapter with a strong foundation focused on student success."

Outside of school, Butler and her husband, Kevin, are proud to call South Berkeley home, where their two sons, Lyndon and Ashton, are active in school and athletics. Ashton, a sophomore, is preparing to show his first pig through Musselman High School's FFA program at the Berkeley County Youth Fair, while the family also enjoys spending time with their four dogs, including a rescued pit bull that serves as a daily reminder not to judge a book by its cover.

As MCES welcomes students for its first year as a K-5 school, Butler looks forward to building a culture of collaboration, excellence, and belonging that will serve students and families for years to come.
