READING, WRITING AND WORLD CULTURES!?!?

Strap on your seatbelt and raise your tray tables to their upright and locked position. We’re about to take you on a tour of the BHS English Department. The goal of our department is to immerse our students in the English language and foster a love of reading, writing and the creative spirit. Without exception, our department has experienced the life-changing power of books, stories and poems. Literature allows us to understand and appreciate how our own culture thinks and how we interact with cultures from around the world too. Literature can remove us from our current situation and allow us to experience something new; to take a break from the doldrums of life and excite the senses. That’s what literature is for.

To nurture that love of literature in our students, the BHS Library and English Department are sponsoring a reading challenge - A Culture of Reading. We are encouraging all of our students to read during advisory and connect with new experiences through books, articles and personal choice reading. Promoting literacy at this level encourages students to be critical thinkers about what is going on around them. Good critical thinking means we are open-minded. In our Dual Enrollment classes, students are examining cultures from around the world and organizing presentations that will immerse their classmates in new cultural experiences. The high school librarian has been working with our Creative Writing class to spread a culture of reading across the area by donating students’ best-loved books to district elementary schools.

Our English teachers are directing the discussion of important books in their classes. Students are learning about risks and consequences by studying The Pearl by John Steinbeck. The Help by Kathryn Stockett motivates students to understand what it was like to work as a household domestic worker during the Civil Rights movement. Markus Zusak gives our students a personal understanding of the Holocaust from the point of view of a little girl in The Book Thief. In addition to motivating students to read in and out of the classroom, our teachers are promoting many efforts to make learning more enjoyable. Some teachers are turning novel studies into fun game opportunities that encourage competition and rigor. Others are using literature circles to discuss books, articles and short stories that promote in-depth critical thinking.

Help us encourage the love of reading in your household. As students share with you the books and stories they are reading at school, share your favorite book or story with them at home.

Creative Writing

Mrs. Gerardi’s Creative Writing class partnered with Mrs. Nelson in the BHS Library to encourage reading at a young level. Students were able to choose their favorite childhood book to donate to other schools in our district. Inside each book, the high school students wrote a short message to the younger reader to encourage them to read and to love reading as they grow and develop. Funds for these books were furnished by a grant our school library received to help create a culture of reading in our area.

March is National Reading Month. Challenge yourself to read something new this month. Encourage others to read. Find joy in reading, and share that joy with others.

Congratulations Alexa Benitez!

Great news—one of your students just reached Premier Distinction, the highest degree in the National Speech & Debate Association Honor Society! Please join us in congratulating Alexa Benitez on this outstanding achievement. Fewer than 3% of NSDA members earn Premier Distinction prior to graduation! This milestone is a celebration of the hundreds of hours Alexa has spent preparing, practicing, and competing to hone their communication and leadership skills.

Please join us in congratulating Alexa, and thank you for your continued support of speech and debate, which makes milestones like this possible.

Congrats Ag Systems Team!

Last week we took a livestock evaluation team, floral team, and an ag systems team to the Northern Utah Invitational in Tremonton, UT. Our Ag Systems team took 8th and our livestock evaluation team took 1st out of over 50 teams. This was a big accomplishment for the team and is hopefully a good indicator for the rest of our year as we head toward state later this year. In addition, Madi Wren placed second in the individual livestock evaluation contest; Bailey Richey, Klancy VanOrden, and Paige Burnett also made top 15 finishes out of over 150 contestants.

I have attached a picture below of the students who competed in the livestock evaluation contest.

A Word from Athletics

The month of February kept our fans on the edge of their seats here at Blackfoot High school. To start the month off we had a nail biter District Girls Basketball game at Shelley. The girls kept the heat and brought home the District 1st place title securing them a trip to State. State was a great experience for those girls, they are awesome and we were so proud of our Lady Broncos!

Next it was the cheerleaders' turn to go to district to qualify for State competitions. The cheerleaders were able to qualify in all of their routines to go to state to compete. At state they took first in all three of their routines and took the overall State 1st place trophy. The cheerleaders went to Anaheim California to compete at the 2023 USA Spirit Nationals competition. They are bringing home some hardware with a 3rd place win in their Pom routine.

The Fillies Dance team competed at Districts and placed 3rd in lyrical, 2nd in military and kick routines, and 1st place in hip-hop beating Shelley HS which hasn't been done in almost a decade. The Fillies did awesome at state competition and were able to take home 4th with their amazing Hip Hop routine, and 5th place in state overall.

Wrestling was also able to bring home 1st place title in the District competition and also secured a spot at State. Wrestling had a great time at State bringing home all kinds of hardware. The teams as a whole were able to take the 4th place title. Trayden Hendersen took 1st for the second year in a row and Mack Mauger took 1st for his 3rd time in a row. Kylan Guerra took 3rd, Cole Inskeep took 4th, Brayden Cosens took 5th, and Sam Smith took 5th.

Boys Basketball was able to take down Shelley in a tight game, this put them as the #3 seed in our district punching their ticket to State as well. Their first game will be 2:00 PM March 2nd @ Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian. We are excited to cheer them on, Go Broncos!!

The pride is shining bright for all our athletes here at Blackfoot High School. It’s always a great day to be a Bronco!

Spring sports officially began on February 24 for baseball, softball, track, and tennis. Let's all hope for the sun to come out and melt those fields so we are able to compete! Ballroom Competition

The ballroom team competed in the Utah classic competition in February. The teams there are from all over southeastern Idaho and northern Utah. These teams are private ballroom teams as well as high school teams. Our ballroom team competed with 3 ballroom styles (Viennese waltz, swing and Tango.) All of which received superior ratings. Our swing placed overall 2nd in our division. Our Tango placed overall first in our division. These kids worked so hard this year and it paid off! I’m so proud of them!
