All Things EQ
Hello Families,
The motto this week is:
I am willing to introduce myself and get to know new people.
Introducing yourself is often the first step toward friendship. While it may seem like a simple skill, it can make a big difference in a student's confidence, sense of belonging, and willingness to connect with others. Even adults can find meeting new people uncomfortable, especially when we worry about how we will be perceived.
Students often feel this too. Sometimes they become so nervous about what others may think that they hold back from saying hello or starting a conversation. That is why learning this skill matters. When children practice introducing themselves and getting to know others, they are developing confidence, courage, and relationship skills that will serve them well throughout life.
Here are two helpful tools you can share with your child:
- When you approach other students, think, "How can I help?" When students focus on being helpful, they spend less time worrying about what others may think of them. Helping might look like saying hello, offering a smile, introducing someone to a friend, or making space for another person to join in. Focusing on others can make social situations feel much less intimidating.
- If an awkward silence happens, ask questions. A quiet moment after an introduction is normal. Questions are a simple and effective way to keep the conversation going. When students ask about another person's interests, hobbies, or favorite activities, they show care and curiosity. Those small questions can help turn an awkward moment into a meaningful connection.
Learning to introduce yourself and get to know others is not just about being social. It is about helping students feel more confident, more connected, and more ready to step into new situations with courage.
"You can't stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes." -Winnie-the-Pooh, A.A. Milne
Have an excellent week,
