TVUSD is delighted to celebrate Kiyara Gunawardena, an outstanding 4th grade student from Abby Reinke Elementary School, for her remarkable performance in last month's RCOE Spelling Bee. Despite it being her first attempt, Kiyara impressively tied for third place in the rigorous 19-round contest. Sumali Akurassa Hewage, Kiyara's mom, had this to share about the experience: "It was intense, but an exciting finish. Kiyara was happy and proud to represent TVUSD today. On the way to the event, she said, 'I am representing my class, my school, and my school district, and I am ready!' This was a great learning experience for a 4th grader and added one more skill to her set. She is already making plans for next year's competition."

Thank you to ARES Assistant Principal and Site Coordinator Shawna O'Brien, and Michele Loza, TVUSD's K-12 ELA Specialist and District Spelling Bee Coordinator, for supporting Kiyara throughout the Spelling Bee process. With four more years of potential competition on the horizon, Kiyara has ample opportunities to showcase her talents. The future holds immense promise for Kiyara, and we eagerly anticipate her continued success!

This Week Was National Library Week: April 7th - April 13th This Week Was National Library Week: April 7th - April 13th

Ready, Set, National Library Week!
zoom_out_map

About National Library Week

National Library Week is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.

In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the ALA and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954. The committee's goals were ambitious. They ranged from "encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time" to "improving incomes and health" and "developing strong and happy family life."

In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. With the cooperation of ALA and with help from the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme "Wake Up and Read!" The 2023 celebration marks the 65th anniversary of the first event.

E-Bike Safety Reminder 🚲 E-Bike Safety Reminder 🚲

zoom_out_map

- City of Temecula's News & Updates (4.9.24)

The City is continuously sharing information on E-bike and E-motorcycle safety to provide awareness and prevent future accidents.

Recently, deputies responded to a report of a traffic collision with major injuries near North General Kearny Road and Nicolas Road involving juveniles on an electric motorcycle. You can learn about this accident at: Southwest Sheriff's Station. As we keep those involved in our thoughts and hearts, the City of Temecula strongly recommends that parents of e-bike and e-motorcycle riders have discussions with their teenagers and adolescents about road safety. The City likewise reminds drivers to be extra alert as the popularity of e-bikes and e-motorcycles continues to grow.

Did you know an “e-bike” without pedals is an electrical motorcycle and cannot be legally operated by unlicensed youth on public roads?

To operate an electric motorcycle legally you need the following:

•A valid motorcycle license issued by the DMV. 36% of motorcycle fatalities involve an unlicensed rider.

•A DOT certified motorcycle helmet. 41% of motorcycle fatalities are not wearing a helmet.

•Minimum liability motorcycle insurance.

•Valid registration on the e-motorcycle.
