Spotlight on Nepal
We shared information last year about Nepal but as it continues to be where are largest group of ELD families are from we thought it would be helpful to share again. Most of our Nepali families are actually Nepali Bhutanese (meaning they were citizens of Bhutan but their families had migrated to Bhutan from Nepal, some of them hundreds of years before). In the 1980s, the King of Bhutan wanted to “ethnically purify” the country by removing Nepali Bhutanese citizens living in the south. He worried about their influence on the country, being predominately Hindu. He wanted Bhutan to be a “Buddhist-only nation, religion, language, and culture”. In the 1990s after much violence and unrest, 20% of Bhutan’s country became refugees. By 2007, there were more than 108,000 Nepali Bhutanese refugees. The refugee camps had very few resources- poor sanitation, water supplies, food supplies, and healthcare. In 2006, the United States offered to resettle 60,000 Nepali Bhutanese refugees. By 2017, the United States has resettled over 92,000 Nepali Bhutanese refugees, 85% of the displaced refugees.
As far as we know, all of our Nepali-speaking students’ families are Nepali Bhutanese. Given all that many of these families have likely been through, we knew this information was incredibly important to share with teachers. Please read the attached article to learn more about the history of the Nepali Bhutanese people. We believe sharing information such as this will help Northern better support our families and students.
Please note: the attached article will not open on your school computer, we apologize! This information was obtained from the Bhutanese Community of Central Ohio.

Strategies to Support ELLs
VISUALS! VISUALS! VISUALS!
Visuals are so important for our English language learners! When ideas are represented visually they are more likely to be recalled than if we just use words. Think about the personal memories you have, the ones that are attached to a visual may be more evident in your mind.
This means that pictures are more stamped into our brains.
Sentence Frames
I would highly recommend using sentence frames for writing and speaking when working with English language learners (ELLs). This can be accompanied with a word bank, word phrases and pictures. ELLs possess a wealth of knowledge and we can help them tap into that knowledge and build upon what they already know and can do. Please keep in mind our students are learning a new language and are not learning a language so we can provide the words and grammatical structures of the new language to help support them.
