Keeping Our School Community Healthy This Winter

As we head into the winter months, we’ve started to see a rise in seasonal illness — something many schools across the country are also grappling with. We understand that keeping your child home when they are unwell can cause disruption to your own work and routines, and we really do appreciate the effort and juggling this can involve.

However, we kindly ask for your continued support in keeping sick children at home. When unwell students come to school, it increases the risk of others — including classmates and staff — becoming unwell too. This past week, we’ve had to split classes due to a combination of staff illness and a shortage of relievers, which is becoming more common across the education sector.

By keeping your child home when they are sick, you’re helping to protect the health and wellbeing of our whole school community. Thank you for your ongoing support and understanding — it truly makes a difference.

Week 4 @ TAPS – Important Notices for Whānau

1. Keep Sick Children Home
We’re heading into the time of winter illnesses, and our staffing is under pressure. If your child is unwell, please keep them home until they’re fully recovered. This helps stop the spread of illness to other students and staff — and supports our ability to run smoothly without splitting classes. Thank you for your understanding and care.

2. Mitey Mental Health Programme in Action
This week (week 4), we’re excited to have Amie from the Mitey team onsite, modelling wellbeing lessons and working alongside our staff. This is part of our whole-school mental health journey, and teachers will be engaging in professional learning to strengthen our delivery of this important kaupapa.

3. Whole School Assembly – Thursday 11:50am
We’ll be celebrating student achievements and enjoying a snapshot of the great things happening across the school.

4. Year 7 & 8 Technology – Thursday
A reminder to our senior whānau that tech classes at Te Aroha College continue as usual this Thursday. Please ensure students arrive on time and are ready for the day.

5. Mr Bertrand Away – Friday 23 May
Mr. Bertrand will be offsite attending a leadership conference. Day-to-day matters will be managed by our senior leaders in his absence.

Thank you for your ongoing support — your involvement makes a huge difference. Here’s to a great week ahead!
