WEEK ENDING IN 10/01/2021

Dear OSES Family Members,

This coming Thursday marks the end of the fourth quarter. Even though we all made unexpected adjustments and faced uncharted challenges, I feel the students, staff, and parents have persevered. Students, staff, and parents will be recognized for their efforts in January for the accomplishments of the first semester.

Thank you to our Parent Volunteer Organization (PVO) who sponsored a lunch for our staff this week. They partnered with a locally owned Latin restaurant in support of the community and in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month. The PVO also is sponsoring the upcoming Sprit Week.

OSES is proud to announce that we are incorporating National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) into our program. The NEHS recognizes outstanding academic achievement, encourages personal responsibility, meaningful service to the school and community, and essential leadership skills. Details of the program are forthcoming.

One goal of OSES is to have all students actively involved in the school. We have several competition teams, academic clubs, and many opportunities for students to get involved. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with your ideas or comments on this accomplishing this goal. We want to make ensure you that OSES is providing each student a chance to shine and grow.

KINDERGARTEN

This week Kindergarten went on a journey through Hispanic countries from all over the world!! We ate empanadas, made papel picado, butterflies from Bolivia and most importantly learned about culturally appropriate activities, lifestyles and how we can work with each other.

On a funny note, Salsa dancing does not mean dancing in Salsa!!

FIRST

This week we learned about the past, present, and future. We learned that timelines can show events in order. We learned that school calendars can show special events and holidays.

In science, we are working on matter and movement. We can sort objects into color, shape, size, weight, temperature, and more. We can describe how objects move in many ways. Objects can move in a straight line, a zig zag, back and forth, up and down, round and round motion and more. We know the difference between a push and a pull. Ask us to show you!

Have a great weekend!

SECOND

In Ms.Coy’s class we are working on force and motion in science. The students had a great time answering the question: Will the penny or marble require more force to knock down the bowling pins( golf tees)?

THIRD

In Ms. Figueroa’s class the students have been working on multiplication and division in math. We broke up into small groups and worked on matching arrays with the correct multiplication/division sentence.

FOURTH

This week, Mr. Mateer’s class has been up to a lot. In math, we’re working on moving from 1 digit to 2 digit multiplication! We started reading mythology and poetry in reading, and we’re working on writing parts of essays. Social studies is all about the first people to live in Florida! There were all kinds of interesting people who lived in those tribes long ago. Finally, in science we learned about changes in matter. Specifically, chemical and physical changes! Physical changes don’t result in new matter, but chemical changes do! To experience this, we had a demonstration where two substances were mixed and created a gas to fill a balloon!

FIFTH

Ms. Galan’s class finished working on bottle rockets. We launched them twice to get reliable data. Our independent variable was the type of wing. This project helps students understand forces, motion, and the scientific process.

SIXTH

In Mr. Rego’s World History class, students finished studying about Mesopotamia (the world’s first civilization). They practiced writing in cuneiform, took notes on Hammurabi, Nebuchadnezzar, and Sargon the Great, as well reviewed key facts with a game of Jeopardy. The students also did a wonderful job on their map projects this quarter! Below are a few examples:

In Mr. Koc’s Turkish class, students listened to a guest speaker who is an expert in water marbling (Ebru). Below is a link to an interesting video about the creative process of making Ebru art.

In music class, we went outside to rehearse our group compositions on the percussion instruments, then performed them for each other!

In Mrs. Gajus’ math classes, the students have been working really hard to master new concepts. In Pre-Algebra, we have completed our units on the Real Number System and Exponents & Scientific Notation. The students can now classify different types of rational and irrational numbers. We are now starting our unit on Linear Equations where students will learn how to solve a variety of equations using different strategies. In Math 6, we have completed our units on Decimal Operations and Fraction Operations. The students can now perform the four operations with decimal values and with fractions. They can also find common factors and multiples for given pairs of values. We are now starting our unit on Rational Numbers where students will learn how to perform operations with all types of numbers, including positive and negative numbers. **Just a quick reminder to please make sure to be checking OSES Connect for upcoming assignments like tests, quizzes, and Study Island, as well as for missing assignments that need to be completed.

SPECIALS

In character education, we worked on collaboration and communication. We focused on using whole-body listening to talk with each other and working together in groups. We also talked about the difference between fixed and growth mindset and the power of yet.

In Ms Scales’ PE: grades k-2 we worked on locomotor movements and nutrition. In grades 3-5 we worked on a cooperative team challenge. The students worked on teamwork, communication, strategy, and skill work during these activities!

This was Mrs. Scales’ last week at OSES. I want to thank everyone for the amazing memories over the last 5 years. I would love to keep in touch! My email is Emiley.stapleton@gmail.com. I hope you had as much fun in PE as I did. Have a magical rest of the year!!

This week in Mrs. Molnar’s class we are working with scoops! We are working on our hand eye coordination and even trying some trick shots! We even got to play a game trying to shoot them into some buckets!

In STEM Lab, each grade level created a different engineering design based on what we have been learning in Science. K and 1st built cars to test force. 2nd grade created Playdough using their knowledge of solids and liquids. 3rd grade worked with light by making shadow puppets. 4th grade discussed renewable energy and made wind cars. 5th grade will be engineering next week. This week they worked out a STEM problem using Math.

This week in art class second and third grade finished up their Echo Drawings where they learned about contour drawing, color and line along with mastering drawing skills that take control and perseverance! Kindergarten and first grade are having fun creating their “monsters” using cut paper, scissors, glue and markers……we aren’t finished yet but they are already looking great!!

  • Text description of your entry (max 150 words)

Your entry will be reviewed by judges including US service members and veterans. The top 10 finalist designs will be 3D printed, glued to pin backs (if necessary), and handed out to veterans who visit the museum. Finalists will also each receive a $100 gift card towards a professional 3D print of their design. FALL PHYSICAL DESIGN CONTEST

November 1st through December 15th, 2021 – Sponsored by Gamewright, Ravensburger, and Calliope Games

Physical games, whether card, dice, or board, present great opportunities to connect, compete, and learn from others. In the Fall Physical Game Design Competition, students will engage in a hands-on STEM experience with their friends and classmates. The Competition will encourage learning, computational thinking, and fellowship, as well as many other 21st-century skills. This virtual experience will enable K-12 students to learn more about game development and practice critical thinking while expanding their portfolios.

All submissions are due by 11:59 pm PST on December 15th, 2021. More information coming soon!
