Some thoughts for the starting school year

April and May 2025
Principal's Message
We are about to complete the 2024-25 school year. Students have worked hard all year and we are excited to see the results from your iReady diagnostics. I hope that you have a relaxing and safe summer. If you are staying in town, the library and City of Monterey Park offer classes and activities all summer long. The Bruggemeyer Library also offers a summer reading program. I encourage all students to stay active by spending some time outdoors and coordinating play dates with friends. The iReady platform will still be available to students if they want to sharpen their skills or prepare for the new year.
We wish our promoting 8th grade students much success as they begin their journey into high school. Throughout their years at Ynez, they have honed their academic skills and developed their independence. I am proud of their efforts in perseverance and goal setting. I have confidence that they will continue SOAR in high school and beyond. Congratulations class of 2025, skies the limit!
Please continue to check your email and our website over the summer as we announce information for the upcoming school year. We look forward to seeing you in August and hearing all about your summer adventures. Have a wonderful summer everyone!
In April our Mental Health Counselor, Ms. Ruth Baratta, hosted kindness activities throughtout the month. She partnered with our PLUS advisor, Ms. Monica Tan, and the Boys and Girls Club to host lunchtime activities such as Be Kind Online and No One Eats alone. Interactive tables and giveaways were available to all students to learn how to be kind online. During the No One Eats Alone campaign, PLUS students had prompts and activities at the lunch tables and invited students to join in the conversation while they ate together. It was a great opportunity to get to know someone new and find commonalities amongst our peers.
Spotlight on April and May Events
Sixth grade Ynez and Emery Park students had the opportunity to go on a 3 day 2 night Science camp at Camp Pollock in the San Bernadino mountains. They were able to experience science in the great outdoors and participate in activities such as archery, tie dye, rock climbing, nature walks and much more. It was a memorable experience and students all raved about the camp food. During our stay at camp, it was too windy to use the zipline but AEF graciously brought students back to camp on May 2nd, so that they can have the zipline experience. Thank you AEF, AUSD and all the donors who made this opportunity possible for our students.
Ynez School held hosted their first Meet Next Year's teacher parent informational meeting. Families were able to meet their child's teachers for the next school year and learn about how they can prepare for the next grade level. Parents of students from Kindergarten through third grade participated in the presentations and walked away with their questions clarified. Students enjoyed time with their friends and enjoyed snacks provided by the Ynez PTA and SGV Catalyst. There were positive comments from parents and teachers regarding the experience. Ynez School appreciates the continued partnership and support from the Ynez PTA and SGV Catalyst.
The Connections Club hosted their Connect 4 Challenge. Students who signed up for the challenge competed all week to determine the finalists who faced off on May 5th, while Club members served as referees. The champions were: Preston Truong and Brandon Liou. It was wonderful to see the strategy the players employed and the sportsmanship displayed. Kudos to the Mr. Wong and Connection Club members for planning the event.
Attendance Counts
Why does attendance matter? Being at school on a daily basis and on time can help your child achieve academic success. Each day counts, so it’s important that we develop good school attendance early on. Building good attendance habits, including arriving to school on time sends a message that school is a priority and important. Although it may seem that missing five minutes may not have an impact, on the contrary, our students who are late are missing out on the teachers’ instructional delivery of lessons. Studies show that attendance is directly linked to student academic success. We want to take every opportunity to ensure that our students receive the optimal environment for learning, therefore, let's all do our part in ensuring that students come to school everyday and on time.
In addition, the law states every person between the ages of six and eighteen is required to attend school regularly and on time. If your child is absent you can request your child’s homework assignment by calling the front office before 9:00 a.m. for pick-up after 1:00 p.m. the same day. This will allow us enough time to notify the teacher and have them send the work to the office.
Chromebooks
We will be collecting Chromebooks before the end of the school year. Our Chromebooks are due for updates and maintenance. Homeroom teachers will be collecting them before the last day of school. Teachers will inform students of the collection date, we ask that students bring their Chromebooks and chargers to school on that day. The Chromebooks will be reassigned at the start of the year. Thank you.

As you plan a successful return to school, we would like to remind families that uniforms are required for all students in grades TK-8th grade. All uniform waivers need to be applied for again. Research has shown that uniforms is one effective means of keeping students focused on learning and is conducive to a safe learning environment. When shopping for clothes this summer, please refer to the uniform guidelines, more detailed information can be found in the Student Handbook and on our website.
Alternative Income Form (AIF)
Please assist the AUSD in securing funding for students. Parents are required to respond to the Alternate Income Form (AIF) survey in order to gain access to other pages of Parent Portal. Completing the AIF may qualify your child for after school care, AP exam fee waivers and increase school budgets. It also affects the funding at Ynez school.
A form must be completed for every child. Go to the Family Portal to update your Alternative Income Form.
Surveys
Your input is valuable in helping best meet you and your child's needs. Please assist us in filling out these surveys.
