May 19-23, 2024

Good morning Cannon Community,

It's hard to believe this is our last Principal Newsletter for the 2023-2024 school year! The year has flown by with so many STEMtastic opportunities and experiences! Last week we celebrated our Cannon Cub leaders at our end of year pep rally, and school spirit was definitely on display! Coach Hood was a fantastic sport to be slimed by so many Cubs that participated in the Kids Heart Challenge this year. It was a BLAST! We also hosted our annual Cannon Career Day! It was a great day filled with our scholars exploring various career paths. a HUGE shout out to our counselor, Mandy Coburn, for planning, organizing, and facilitating another amazing career showcase. Please also help with thank all of our parents that signed up and showed up to share their professions with our Cubs! It was also an amazing opportunity to celebrate so many Baseball Cubs this weekend!

This week we continue our celebrations with our grade-level success ceremonies and end of year parties! Due to success ceremonies, the last week of school is closed to lunch visitors. You will receive communication from your grade level teachers that lunch with a loved one is part of their end of year celebration that is the exception and you may attend lunch on that day and communicated time. Also, If you are attending grade level celebrations and your student has medication in the clinic, please stop by and pick it up from Nurse Kendra on your way out.

Success Ceremony Dismissal (If you would like to check your child out early as a partial day absence): We've learned that you really like to take your children home early on event days. Thank you for always understanding that this takes time with our safe dismissal process! In an effort to be more efficient we are going to try a new dismissal process, if you want to take your child home early after their Success Ceremony and Celebration. Homeroom teachers will have a list of approved guardians that may check out students. Guardians will check their Cub out directly from their homeroom teacher by initialing next to their name. Once you have properly checked your student out with your teacher you may leave with them to enjoy the rest of your day.

As a reminder, the last day of school is Thursday, May 23 and is an early dismissal day. We will begin dismissal at 11:45 - School's Out for Summer! Your 2024-2025 Principal Newsletter will begin Sunday, July 21st. Until then, have a happy and safe summer break with your family and friends!

Proud to be your principal,

Dr. Tina Garrett

Campus Excellence Committee~

Each GCISD campus has a Campus Excellence Committee (CEC). Each year, this committee will establish and review the campus educational goals, objectives, and progress made within the Campus Improvement Plan while ensuring alignment with the vision, mission and District Improvement Plan. This committee is composed of representation from campus teachers, staff, parents, and business owners in the community. Thank you to all who have served on our CEC, and we hope to have you again next school year.

If you are interested in serving on the Cannon CEC, please reach out to me directly, to share your interest at, tina.garrett@gcisd.net. Having a full committee composed of all of the various stakeholders listed above is important to foster our continued growth!

This year, the Cannon CEC met on the following dates: September 11, December 4, January 22, and April. 22. A variety of topics were discussed including the following:

-State Accountability/STAAR performance from the 2022-2023 school year: The State of Texas did not release A-F ratings, but we reviewed our data from the Spring 2023 STAAR tests. We also discussed our campus improvement plan, which included goals, aligned to district priorities, to continue enhancing our scholars' academic growth in reading, math, and science. The CEC committee also discussed Standards Based Report Cards (SBRCs) on December 4, 2023. We discussed the purpose of report cards, the differences between SBRCs and traditional numeric report cards, and campus input on this topic. This information was received by the campus principal and brought to GCISD Principal Meetings and the District Excellence Committee for consideration. In our last meeting, we discussed our campus budget and financial stewardship for the 2024-2025 school year.
